Chapter 4 Habitats

Creek, and Parker Creek. These areas require site-specific provisions to protect resource values (e.g., no new discharges or expansion of existing discharges) (see 15A NCAC 02B.0225).

Additionally, there are 130 miles of Outstanding Resource Waters (ORW) in the basin. The ORW supplemental classification is a subset of HQWs and intended to protect unique and special waters having excellent water quality and being of exceptional state or national ecological or recreational significance. This designation represents segments of the Black River, South River, and Six Runs Creek (NCDEQ 2025f,g) . There are 725 miles of freshwater streams and 17,740 acres of freshwater impoundments considered to be Nutrient Sensitive Waters (NSW) in the Cape Fear River Basin (NCDEQ 2025f,g) . The NSW classification applies to all waters in the Haw River watershed and is intended for those that need additional nutrient management because of greater vulnerability to excessive aquatic vegetation growth (NCDEQ 2025g,g). 4.5.5.3 Aquatic Species Appendix 3 provides lists of SGCN and other priority species for which there are knowledge gaps or management concerns. Appendix 3-18 identifies aquatic SGCN associated with aquatic communities found in this river basin. In addition to the crayfish, freshwater fish and mussels, and aquatic snails found in the basin, there are also species that have both aquatic and terrestrial stages to their life history. The following list of SGCN are also associated with the aquatic communities in the Cape Fear River Basin
