Chapter 4 Habitats
Priority Conservation Action, Examples of Focal Species or Focal Habitats • Continue routine surveys for priority and state-listed crayfish species. Hiwassee Headwater Crayfish Knotty Burrowing Crayfish Red Burrowing Crayfish • Continue routine surveys for priority and state-listed mussel and snail species. Longsolid Tennessee Clubshell Rainbow Tennessee Pigtoe Spike • Monitor Blueback Herring populations to assess impacts on priority species. 4.5.9.5.3 Research Research topics that facilitate appropriate conservation actions include habitat use and preferences, reproductive behavior, fecundity, population dynamics and genetics, feeding, competition, and food web dynamics. Increased understanding of life histories and status helps determine the vulnerability of priority species to further imperilment, in addition to identifying possibilities for improved management and conservation. All studies should provide recommendations for mitigation and restoration. Formal descriptions for known or putative undescribed species and investigations aimed at resolving taxonomic status are needed. Valley River Crayfish Priority Conservation Action, Examples of Focal Species or Focal Habitats • Resolve the taxonomy of mussels and assist partners with species descriptions for: Fusconaia sp. Pleurobema sp. Villosa sp. Smoky Dace • Study early life history, propagation and culture, movement, and habitat use of Sicklefin Redhorse. • Conduct research to improve habitat conditions in regulated reaches of rivers in the basin. Hiwassee River Nottely River • Work with partners to resolve taxonomic issues for crayfish in the genus Cambarus . Cambarus sp. • Investigate aquatic community response to restoration projects in priority areas.
