Chapter 3 North Carolina Species

Priority Conservation Action, Examples of Focal Species or Focal Habitats • Formal descriptions for known or putative undescribed species and investigations aimed at resolving taxonomic status are needed.

• Conduct research on habitat management techniques to maintain suitable habitat for SGCN and other priority species.

• Publish formal descriptions and use genetic investigations to resolve taxonomic status for known or putative undescribed species or SGCN for which there is some taxonomic uncertainty.

3.1.10.4 Management Practices Management practices that reduce impacts and work synergistically with other conservation actions are needed to enhance the resilience of all species. Particular needs include preserving biodiversity, protecting native populations and their habitats, and improving degraded habitats. In addition, regulation and prevention of the introduction and spread of exotic or invasive species are vital. Priority Conservation Action, Examples of Focal Species or Focal Habitats • Restore, create, and protect habitats for SGCN and other priority species, especially seasonal wetlands, degraded wetland systems, and riparian zones, and maintain habitat connectivity with uplands.

• Develop management practices that control or eradicate invasive and nonnative species; technical guidance outreach should include prevention of nonnative species introductions.

• Continue working with partners on stream restoration efforts and consider using low impact, low-cost measures where appropriate. Beaver dam analogs (BDAs) Riparian buffer zones Floodplain reconnection

3.1.10.5 Conservation Programs and Partnerships Conservation programs, incentives, and partnerships should be fully used to preserve high- quality resources and protect important natural communities. Measures that use existing regulatory frameworks to protect species and their habitats should be incorporated where applicable. Land conservation or preservation can serve numerous purposes in the face of anticipated climate change but overall can promote ecosystem resilience.
