Chapter 6 Conservation Goals and Priorities
In partnership with American Rivers, SARP developed the National Aquatic Barrier Inventory and Prioritization Tool to improve aquatic connectivity in the Southeast. With partners, SARP implements the three components of the Aquatic Connectivity Program: • The aquatic barrier inventory serves as a crucial resource for identifying and prioritizing aquatic connectivity projects in collaboration with partners. It offers key insights into the location, condition, and attributes of potential barriers. • As a key tool for collaboration, the aquatic barrier inventory helps identify and prioritize aquatic connectivity projects. It provides crucial information on the location, condition, and features of potential barriers. • By combining the aquatic barrier inventory with prioritization results, the Aquatic Connectivity Teams (ACTs) are empowered to collaborate across sectors. These state- specific teams bring together partners to advance regional aquatic connectivity through hands-on projects, increased outreach and education on barrier removal, and improved coordination between agencies and organizations. Currently, ACTs are active in 15 states. The National Aquatic Barrier Inventory & Prioritization Tool is available online https://aquaticbarriers.org. Additional information about SARP is available from its website http://southeastaquatics.net. 6.9.20 Triangle Connectivity Collaborative (TCC) The Triangle Connectivity Collaborative’s (TCC) mission is to conserve and restore landscape habitat connectivity that ensures long-term protection and resilience of biodiversity and natural resources. The collaborative was formed over concerns about fragmentation of protected lands within the Upper Neuse and New Hope Creek watersheds. TCC is guided by a strategic action plan and a habitat network analysis that identifies the priority wildlife corridors and habitat blocks in the watersheds. Members of this group have been successful in getting these priorities into transportation and land use planning efforts within the region. For more information or to download the strategic action plan or associated GIS data, visit the website https://connectedconservationnc.org/home. 6.9.21 Upper Neuse River Basin Association (UNRBA) The mission of the Upper Neuse River Basin Association (UNRBA) is to preserve the water quality of the Upper Neuse River Basin through innovative and cost-effective pollution reduction strategies. This association was formed in 1996 to provide a forum for cooperation on water quality protection and water resource planning and management within the 770- square-mile watershed. Seven (of the eight) municipalities, six counties, and local Soil and Water Conservation Districts in the watershed voluntarily formed the UNRBA.
