Chapter 6 Conservation Goals and Priorities
6.10 Other National and International Programs and Partnerships Several national and international initiatives, partnerships, and programs have been developed following the global outbreaks of COVID-19, highly pathogenic avian influence (HPAI), and West Nile Virus. The following sections provide information about these initiatives. 6.10.1 One Health Initiative The One Health Initiative is a collaborative, multisectoral, and transdisciplinary approach— working at the local, regional, national, and global levels—with the goal of achieving optimal health outcomes (CDC 2025) . One Health is a worldwide strategy for expanding interdisciplinary collaborations, recognizing that the health of people is closely connected to the health of animals and our shared environment. It is dedicated to improving the lives of all species through the integration of medicine and environmental science (One Health Initiative 2025) . Additional information is available online https://onehealthinitiative.com. 6.10.2 International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is a membership union made up of government and civil society organizations. It delivers the knowledge, tools, and projects that enable societies, economies, and nature to thrive in harmony. The IUCN’s independent Commissions gather and assess data against formal standards, which provide members access to scientific information, support for publishing research, and opportunities to engage with peer scientific networks. The IUCN has served as a standard-setter for conservation and sustainable development. Among the most widely-used IUCN standards are, for example, the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria, the Global Standard for the Identification of Key Biodiversity Areas, the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems Categories and Criteria, the Guidelines for Applying Protected area Management Categories, and the IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions.
