stricken down by death, and in a moment had been called from time into eternity. Chalmers suffered an agony of self-re proach that he had not spoken to him ur gently of Christ. It was touching to see him sit down on a bank repeatedly, with tears in his eyes, and say : “Ah 1 God has rebuked me ; I know now what St. Paul means by being instant in season and out o f season. Had I addressed that old man last night with urgency, it might have seemed out of season to human eyes, but how seasonable it would have been 1” jvwrrL andrum . II. P rofessing with the L ips A clock may have an excellent machin ery, its wheels may revolve with regularity, but it is of no service unless it has a face and hands to profess the hours o f the day. Thus it is necessary that the inward life of the believer should be made manifest in his profession. One says he lets his ex ample tell his life. True ; but why not your words and public acts as well tell the story of Jesus.?—R owlands . III. To E very C reature The late Duke of Wellington once met a young clergyman who, being aware of His Grace’s former residence in the East, and of his familiarity with the ignorance and obstinacy of the Hindoos in support of their false religion, gravely proposed the following question : “Does not Your Grace think it almost useless and absurd to preach the gospel to the Hindoos?” « Thé Duke immediately rejoined: “Look, Sir, to your marching orders. ‘Preach the gospel to every creature.’ ’’—T rench . IV. A n E nthusiast Once, at Watton, Rowland Hill was car ried away by the impetuous rush of his feelings, and exclaimed : “ Because I am in earnest, men call me an enthusiast; but I am not; mine are the words o f truth and soberness. I once saw a gravel pit fall in and bury three human beings alive. I shouted so loudly for help that I was heard at the distance of a mile; help came, and rescued two of the poor sufferers. No one called me an enthusiast then ; and when I see eternal destruction ready to fall on poor sinners, and about to entomb them ir revocably in an eternal mass o f woe, and call aloud to them to escape, shall I be called an enthusiast now?”—L andrum . V. T he H uman T ouch An old potter, who was shaping the clay into the desired shape by his hands was asked by a visitor, “Why don’t you have machinery to do that?” The old man replied, “We have tried all kinds of machinery and failed ; somehow it needs the human touch.” God has work that cannot be done by machinery.—S ayles . VI. J P reach the W ord An aged Christian minister said : “.When I was a young man I knew everything ; when I got to be thirty-five years «if age in my ministry, I had only a hundred doc trines of religion; at forty ye^rs, I had only fifty doctrines; at sixty years, I had ten; and now I am dying at/seventy-five years o f age, and there is Qiily one thing I know, and that is that Christ Jesus came into the world to save signers.”—T almage . / /

OCTOBER IS, 1933 HOW M AY OUR MEETINGS BE MADE MORE HELPFUL TO US? H ebrews 10:19-25 Suggestions for the Meeting Try an entirely different program this time. Call it a triangular meeting. Have three leaders—a song leader, a devotional leader, and a discussion leader. First, let the song leader conduct a spir ited song service: Hymn—“The Old Rugged Cross.” . Hymn—“ One Day.” Duet—“The Rose o f Sharon.” Solo— “My Task.” Hymn—“O That Will Be Glory.” Chorus—“Following Jesus.” Second, let the devotional leader give a ten-minute quiet devotional talk on He brews 10:25. Third, let the discussion leader conduct a round table on “ How to Make Our Meet ings More Helpful.” Let some previously appointed speakers lead out, and urge all to make suggestions. In the communion and fellowship of saints lies one of the surest guarantees of adherence to the faith. God has so or dained it. Hence the writer of the Hebrews admonishes his readers not to forsake the assembling of themselves together. A pastor once visited in the home of a careless member to press on him the need of church attendance. As the man made one excuse after another, the pastor rose quietly and, taking a live coal from the grate, laid it off by itself without saying anything. He went on with pleasant con versation on other subjects for a few mo ments. Then, calling attention to the coal which had become black and cold, he re minded his parishioner of the need o f per sonal contact with other Christians to keep warmth. The man immediately caught the force of the argument and promised to be more in attendance. II. F or the D iscussion L eader Have variety in the meetings. Emphasize prayer; depend upon the power of prayer to make the meetings help ful. “With God all things are possible.” Have a pre-prayer circle. Secure leaders who will faithfully prepare and preside. Keep the missionary interest keen. Let “others” be your motto Tbe-sUf-centered society dies__ Use posters freely and continuously. Advertise your meetings. Make your announcements in such a way 3 * to attract young people. ' Make much o f your music. Impress on all speakers the importance of speaking, not reading, their messages. Have a strong membership committee who will not only invite new members, but who will be on hand to greet all strangers. A warm handclasp sometimes means a new member. Don’t let the meetings lag. Be a booster, always. Say to yourself, over and over : “What kind of society would our Endeavor be, If every member in it were just like me?” ,, Then be what you know you ought to be.
