person ought I to be in all holy conversa tion and godliness 1 It weakens my spir itual life immeasurably that I think seldom and superficially of the second advent of my King.— A lexander S mellie . of temptation, that we may be workers to gether with God in destroying evil. . . . We are to be “more than conquerors,” to learn such lessons from the enemy as will fit us for his next assaults and prepare us to meet him without fear of defeat. To be “more than conquerors” is not only to have the victory, but the spoils of victory. — A . B. S im pson . OCTOBER 13 “Maran-atha [our Lord will come]" (I Cor. 16:22). Because Jesus comes, how unworldly I should be I It cannot be of much moment whether I am rich or poor here, whether I am strong or weak, whether my days on this side o f the advent are shorter or longer; I am in the world for the briefest season. It is but a place of call where I halt on the way to the City of God. Because Jesus is on His way, how holy I should be! His eyes will search and prove me. He will make inquiry into my unspoken thoughts. He will put my intentions into His scales. He will bring into the light of day the qualities and the principles of my soul . . . Because I must meet Him so soon and so solemnly, what manner of

hopes, ambitions, aspirations, and even physical life? Is there any part of life that finds its satisfaction elsewhere? This is the real test; and this is why we need to ask God’s Holy Spirit to convict us of any dis satisfaction, anything in our life that is causing spiritual concern at this moment. It is a sure and certain test that at any time, under all circumstances, we can gauge our own spiritual life by asking this one question, What is Jesus Christ to me now? Am I satisfied with Christ? ' —W . H. G riffith T h om as . OCTOBER 10 "And we know that all things work to gether for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose” (Rom. 8:28). Notice the first two words of this text, “We know.” In the twenty-sixth verse, we have the negative, “W e know not.” “We know not what we should pray for as we ought.” Beware o f the man who always knows how to pray. Paul says we do not know what to pray for as we ought, and Paul was speaking from experience. When he had a thorn in the flesh, he prayed three times that God would take it away. But God said, “ I am going to give you some thing better—grace enough to bear it.” It is true that we may not know what to pray for, but there is one thing that we do know: When we have prayed—whether rightly or wrongly—all things do work to gether for good to them that love God and are the called according to His purpose. OCTOBER 11 "Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the the labour of. the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God o f my sal vation" (Hab. 3:17, 18). What? Gone? Yes, gone! all gone! Everything wiped out! “Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation.” “ Though he slay me, yet will I trust him.” One by one, His loving hands unclasp our clinging fingers from the things of earth, from figs and grapes, from luxuries first and then from necessities; that He Himself may be the more dear to u s; that He Himself may be the cause of our rejoicing; that heaven’s realities may seem of infinitely more precious worth than earth’s uncertainties.— T h om as A. L am bie . If I have nothing, I must beg of Him. If I have nothing, I must accept His gifts. If I have nothing, I must depend upon Him for everything. Oh, blessed poverty I Put that together, dear soul—begging of Jesus, taking from Jesus, depending on Jesus. This is the A, B, C o f holiness. — M ark G u y P earse . OCTOBER 12 "In all these things we are more than conquerors" (Rom. 8:37). It is a great thing to be a conqueror in Christian life and conflict. It is a much greater thing to be a conqueror “in all these things” which the apostle names, a perfect host of trials, troubles, and foes. But what does it mean to be “more than con-- queror” ? It is to have such a victory as will effectually break the adversary’s power, and not only defend us from his at tacks, but effectually weaken and destroy his strength. This is one of the purposes
