plete control of our affections, and by let ting Him love others through us. W e can manifest Christ’s own love only as we can say with Paul, “ I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son o f God, who loved me, and gave him self for me” (Gal. 2:20). Then because we can “do all things through Christ which strengtheneth” us (Phil. 4:13), we can love even as He loved us. “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born o f God, and knoweth God” (1 John 4:7 ). Helps for the Leader If we were to judge solely by the in struction given in Matthew S :43, 44, we might conclude that the Word of God passes lightly over the seriousness o f sin. It is true that our Lord requires o f the Christian a forgiving spirit, an attitude of love that He alone can impart. But He does not permit the easy, sentimental con doning of crime, the weak “pardoning” which defeats justice in many modern criminal cases. The daily readings for Christian Endeavor give some Scriptural solutions as to what should be done with the criminal. Let us consider a few. I. C r e a te R e spec t for L a w (Tit. 3:1-7). If “an ounce o f prevention is worth a pound of" cure,” as the old saying goes, then this word of Paul’s is exceedingly valuable. 1. Poor home training breeds criminals. When authority, love, and religion are missing in a home, it is difficult to send forth children who have respect for other personalities and who respond to law. 2. Bad company makes criminals. The combined conniving o f several minds us ually makes crime, and one wild person in a group o f companions can get the whole group started in wrong actions. 3. Physical needs make crime. When unemployment and poverty are widespread, some persons will steal to eat, and will kill for money which will bring comfort. 4. Society’s neglect makes criminals.
