Connect With the Natural World at Garrison Art Center
“Vaya Con Dios” by Michael Prettyman.
“Wild Woods” by Stephanie Garmey.
Garrison Art Center will pres- ent two new exhibits next month, at 23 Garrison’s Landing. “Wild Woods” by Stephanie Garmey celebrates her unique vi- sion and the human connection to
the natural world, while “In Suspect Terrain” by Michael Prettyman explores the tension between beau - ty, climate threat, and the bizarre through recreations of historic landscape paintings.
Both will run from Feb. 7 to
mal lives as living libraries guided by inherited knowledge, migratory paths, and deep relationships to land. As human impact threatens these delicate balances, the exhibi - tion invites reflection on our shared
origins and calls for protection, respect, and coexistence with the natural world. As part of “In Suspect Terrain” Prettyman’s “Fire Paintings” recre- ates historic American landscapes in oil, interrupting their bucolic calm with fire. Blending humor and trag - edy that reflect the fragility of our environment in the Anthropocene, these works reveal a world shaped by climate change and cultural upheaval. In his “UFO Paintings,” Pret - tyman introduces small, delicate UFOs into otherwise ordinary skies, subtly transforming the landscape. These figures evoke the unseen and the jarring, creating a dialogue between the familiar and the myste- rious – the elusive “other.” Together, the series confronts humanity’s place in history and the environment, exploring loss, won - der, and the abnormal possibilities of our shared world. Prettyman will lead an artist talk Feb. 22. An opening reception for both exhibits is scheduled Saturday Feb. 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. The galleries at Garrison Art Center are open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For information about exhibitions, classes, and other programs at GAC, visit garrisonartcenter.org or call 845-424-3960. Job Fair ShopRite of Carmel is inviting job-seekers to explore career oppor - tunities during a walk-in hiring fair Saturday, Jan. 31. (The snow date is Saturday, Feb. 7.) From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., in-store recruitment events for full-time, part-time, and management posi- tions will take place. No advance registration is required, and candi- dates can simply stop by to speak with hiring teams and learn more about available roles.
