in motion Pearland FALL 2020
HELLO, PEARLAND!
Lately, things have been uncertain; we have all been working to keep healthy and safe by adapting to the COVID-19 world. Like restaurants in the rest of the country, Pearland restaurants have modified their operating procedures. Practically all businesses have adopted new operating guidelines. Most meetings and many classrooms

have moved online. At your local City government, we have taken extraordinary steps to keep our community and our employees safe. All the while, we continue to deliver, albeit perhaps in a different form, the public safety, water and wastewater, road and drainage and other services upon which you rely. In all this uncertainty, two things remain constant--our communications such as this publication and the people who pour themselves into the work of public service. We have great colleagues here--the Parks & Recreation teammembers have been especially creative in finding ways to engage with a community they are used to seeing in person daily. On our Pearland Parks & Recreation Facebook page, we have uploaded virtual group fitness videos and Camp at Home 2020 videos for all to enjoy. Employees at the Knapp Activity Center have taken to the streets to deliver meals to residents who would normally eat at the Center and events like Sunset Cinema (a drive-in concept where visitors can get out while still socially distancing) are being tested and are well-received. There is an air of excitement and an appetite for innovation that could only be created out of necessity. So, we are innovating this publication as well. We are taking this opportunity to show off more of the “team behind the scenes” in addition to programs currently available, because this publication typically focuses on program offerings. This has been a challenging time in many ways and for many people, but when I look at the community and engagement with City staff I am encouraged and optimistic about the future. Join me in my optimism! I hope you enjoy this latest edition of Pearland in Motion .

DIRECTOR’S EDITORIAL
Coming Together In times of struggle, we usually come together as a community and family, whatever that dynamic looks like to you. But during a pandemic, we’re faced with navigating something uncharted: trials and tribulations–but no tribe. As a dad, husband, parishioner, Pearlander, and so importantly here, a public servant–your director of Parks & Recreation–I have a greater responsibility. I consider myself beyond lucky to have delivered smiles, access and camaraderie for nearly 20 years. Until this year, the biggest obstacle to doing that was a small thunderstorm, or a resource deficit that would soon pass. The year 2020 is more than half-completed, and I feel like I’ve given and heard several lifetimes worth of anecdotes, phrases, ‘sayings,’ and various other clichés. It’s all with good intention though and based on a singular concept: we don’t know how to do life alone. Going our existence in isolation is something that we have such negative feelings about, we’ve used it as a form of punishment for near time eternal. That won’t discourage me, or the amazing group of people I call colleagues. You aren’t by yourself, instead we’re simply all alone together. It has been with great pride and happiness that I have continued to review and enthusiastically support resourceful ways to maintain a connection with the community I call home, and the people here whom I serve. As the national stage has displayed events this year that haven’t always portrayed grace or humanity, I have doubled-down and insisted that as your provider of services to enhance your quality of life, I will try harder to ensure no one feels alone or unwelcome. Upon the dynamic and evolving advice of medical professionals, we have made many difficult decisions this year regarding which features, and among them how we will continue service delivery. Admittedly, no one decision will bring joy to all, but I will commit that no one decision will bring undue danger to any. I commit to being, and leading a team who is ready to serve you in unique ways that consider circumstance, but never lose sight of what matters most to all of us each day: YOU! Stay well and stay connected.

The Role of a
AQUATICS
Days not having to use rescue and first aid skills are great days for lifeguards for one reason: their job of cautioning swimmers and preventing unsafe use of the pool resulted in a safe aquatic experience. The skills learned as a certified lifeguard have helped prepare past and present staff for responding to emergencies that they have or will encounter in their lives. Rescues and emergency responses are not the only responsibilities that our lifeguards have. Ensuring that the facility is safe, clean and set up for different activities are part of their core responsibilities. From checking pool chemical levels, to cleaning floors and high-touch surfaces, our staff members are working hard to provide a safe environment for you to enjoy.
PREVENT Caution swimmers against unsafe use of the pool. MONITOR Provide surveillance to assigned area and search for swimmers in distress. RESPOND Provide care through rescue, first aid and CPR.

Water Safety
As of September 22, 2020, there have been a total of 69 drownings this year in Texas for individuals ages 18 and under. That is 69 too many; 53 of the 69 were children ages 4 and under. Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death in children of all ages and the #1 cause of death of children ages 1-4. Especially now during these trying times, water safety must be a TOP PRIOITY for everyone--children and adults alike. Every day in the United States, 10 people drown, totaling 3,650 people each year. While swim lessons don’t necessarily prevent drownings and are not a substitute for adult supervision, it is important to teach children and adults to swim. To ensure that no family suffers a tragic loss due to drowning, here are some helpful tips to keep you and your family safe:
■ SUPERVISE: Never leave children unsupervised near a body of water,
the pool and alarms that sound an alert when someone enters the pool. Don’t assume that these actions will always prevent your child from getting in a pool. Children are very intelligent and determined, especially those ages 4 and under. They will
including a bath. If children are near water, you should never presume that someone else is supervising them. Assign an adult Water Guardian whose sole responsibility is to watch children who are in, near or around water. The role of an adult Water Guardian differs from that of a lifeguard. The Water Guardian’s role is to watch and PREVENT emergencies. A lifeguard is trained to rescue in the event of an emergency. Teach children to stay away fromwater unless accompanied by a qualified adult who knows how to swim, stays within arm’s reach of the child and maintains eye to eye contact with the child. Have a phone available for emergencies. DO NOT talk, text, or surf the Internet while you are on Water Guardian duty! Do not rely on air-filled or foam toys, such as water wings, noodles or inner tubes, to keep children safe. ■ LEARN CPR: While at this time it could be hard to participate in a CPR class, there are still options available to learn lifesaving procedures. There are many videos that teach the basics of CPR and many songs to help keep you at the right rate of compressions (for example, “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees and “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor). ■ AVOID ALCOHOL: Don’t drink alcohol when you are boating, swimming or supervising children who are swimming or playing in water. ■ FENCE IN HOME POOLS AND ADD ALARMS: Install a fence at least 4 feet tall that separates the pool area from the house and yard. Install self-closing and self-latching gates that open away from
find whatever is available to stack in order to climb over a fence and into the pool. Make sure that buckets, boxes and anything that can be stacked are safely stored away behind locked doors. ■ STAY IN DESIGNATED AREAS: At public beaches and pools, swim only in areas set aside for swimming. At beaches, pay attention to posted warnings about unsafe swimming conditions. Teach children to stay away from drains, and don’t allow children to swim in drainage ditches or other water-filled areas not intended for swimming. ■ KEEP BATHROOM DOORS CLOSED: Unfortunately, 10 of the 53 child drownings in Texas so far this year have been bathtub-related. Six of those 10 were children under the age of 2. DO NOT talk, text, or surf the Web while your children are taking a bath. DO NOT leave the bathroom to answer your phone if it goes off in another room and leave your children unattended. Install a safety latch or doorknob cover on the outside of the door and toilet safety locks.
Help eliminate drowning and save lives so no family suffers such a tragic loss. No one-- adult nor child-- should become a drowning statistic. For more information: check out helpandhope.org , watersafetyusa.org , and stopdrowningnow.org .

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH Pearland Parks & Recreation offers a wide variety of programs for youth. Programs are targeted for Early Childhood (ages 9 months–5 years), Youth (ages 6-12 years) and Teens (ages 13-18 years). Our objective for Early Childhood classes is to provide small group classes that focus on enhancing the mental, physical and emotional well-being of a child in a fun and safe environment. The Youth programs focus on providing a variety of opportunities to learn something new that encourages growth and responsibility while discovering a new interest. Our Teen program’s objective is to provide an outlet and foundation that will allow participants to develop a positive identity and social competencies in a safe and supportive environment.
YOUTH ACTION COUNCIL (YAC) The Youth Action Council (YAC) serves as the voice of the Pearland teen community and promotes youth leadership and responsibility through services and community involvement. In YAC, everyone has an equal voice in the decision-making process. This structure allows for the free sharing of ideas and open discussion so that we can best represent the teen community. YAC members have also designed an application process and peer-interview process for becoming a member. We focus on quality over quantity when it comes to membership and allow current members to decide who is the right fit for the current council. To be eligible to become a member of YAC, you must be a Pearland resident between the ages of 12 and 18. Applications are accepted year-round, however peer- interviews are conducted only in September and January. Benefits of Becoming a YAC Member ■ Represent your community
■ Gain and enhance vital leadership skills ■ Make a difference by addressing issues and concerns affecting Pearland’s youth ■ Have a positive impact on your community ■ Have fun

I’m Just Playing MARY KATE WARD, YOUTH DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR
When asked, “Why is play so important to include in our lives?” I find that the clearest way to define the power of play is to imagine your childhood without ever experiencing a day of play. So, consider that you have never played or participated in tag, board games, underwater screaming matches, storytelling, Disney movies, singing, action figures, dodgeball, shooting hoops, Barbies, keep-a-way, wrestling, daydreaming, card games, football, finger painting, soccer games or joke telling. If those memories weren’t in your childhood, what would you be left with? As the Youth Development Coordinator, my job is to help young people develop positive life skills by providing supportive staff, quality programs, and a safe camp environment. I do my job by incorporating play into every aspect of the programs I manage and facilitate. The American Academy of Pediatrics clinical report, “The Power of Play: A Pediatric Role in Enhancing Development in Young Children,” explains how and why playing with both adults (specifically parents) and peers is key to building thriving brains, bodies, and social bonds—all important in today's world. Research shows play can improve children's abilities to plan, organize, get along with others and regulate emotions. In addition, play helps with language, math and social skills and even helps children cope with stress. Therefore, when children participate in the programs I’m responsible for, they will have the foundation leading them to become more effective and thriving adults. So, to the future I say, “You’re welcome.” However, the benefits of play in our lives don’t stop once we reach a certain age. Even though play for adults is critical in our stressful go-go- go lives, our society tends to dismiss play for adults. Play is perceived as unproductive, petty or even a guilty pleasure. The notion is that once we reach adulthood, it’s time to get serious. And between personal and professional responsibilities, there’s no time to play. Many brilliant and driven adults have said “the opposite of play is work.” I believe that statement is false; I believe the opposite of play is depression. One of the things that may often stop us from playing is that we, as adults, get very set on who we are and the types of activities that we do and do not like. But play is healthy and fun, so it benefits us figuratively—or literally—to roll the dice and allow play back into our lives. Play brings joy. And it’s vital for problem solving, creativity and relationships. Remember that play is important for all aspects of our lives, and also can stimulate your imagination, helping you adapt and solve problems, improve relationships and your connections to others. Sharing laughter and fun can foster empathy, compassion, trust and intimacy with others. So, I am begging all of you to give yourself permission to play every day.

As a leading city dedicated to delivering high quality programs to its citizens, the City of Pearland is proud to announce the opening of its very own Miracle League. Through its Adaptive Recreation division, Pearland Parks & Recreation provides programs for individuals with diverse abilities. The goal is to provide activities that help participants feel a part of the community through socialization and physical activities. The Miracle League provides the opportunity to play baseball in a barrier-free environment. The baseball field is a customized rubber turf field that accommodates every athlete at each ability level. The new field will be an addition to the phase two project at the Sports Complex at Shadow Creek Ranch. The complex, which currently houses youth baseball fields and adult softball fields, will now become more inclusive for residents in the community. The Pearland Miracle League field is set to open in spring 2021. Participants will be able to access the field during our spring training when we will be teaching them how to play baseball and helping them get accustomed to the field. We then plan to kick off the first season in Let’s Play Ball!
spring 2022. The league will provide two seasons a year, in the fall and spring. Each athlete will be provided a uniform that will include a shirt and a hat and will get a trophy at the end of the season. All equipment, with modifications to help accommodate each athlete’s needs, will be provided. Registration is free for all athletes to help alleviate any financial barriers. With some athletes requiring additional assistance, we will offer volunteers, or “buddies,” to assist each athlete. The volunteers will be easily identifiable so parents can feel at ease with individuals who are assisting their child. The Miracle League will be a wonderful asset for the community by creating inclusivity and awareness. Having a customized field along with other baseball fields provides opportunity for new friendships to develop not only with children with disabilities among themselves, but also with able-bodied children. In Pearland, we believe that everyone should feel included and be able to play in his own community and with our new Miracle League we believe we can help achieve that goal.

NATURE CENTER
ADVENTURES WITH EDU-KATIE Adventures with Edu-Katie is an educational video series designed to meet a multiaged audience and teach viewers about nature, conservation and actions to take at home to engage with the natural environment. The instructional videos are posted to the Dolores Fenwick Nature Center (DFNC) Facebook page and the City of Pearland’s YouTube page on the last Friday of each month. DFNC NATURE TRIVIA NIGHTS Nature Trivia Nights are a fun way to compete with friends and family while learning intriguing animal facts. Each event features five rounds of trivia that will stump even the most dedicated nature nerds! With the ability to be hosted virtually or in person, these Nature Trivia Nights are a great way to stay connected.
FIELD TRIPS AND DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAMS
The DFNC offers a variety of field trips available both on-site and via virtual programming. All programming is aligned with Texas education standards and can be tailored to fit various age groups. Examples of distance learning topics are: Scoop on Poop, Home Sweet Home, Just Right for Night, Wetland Exploration and Order-Up! These programs include a pre-lesson activity to jumpstart student critical thinking on the topic, a live lesson with our park naturalist and a post-lesson discussion and activity to expand learned knowledge. For more information or to book a program, call the Delores Fenwick Nature Center at 281.652.1960 .
VISIT THE DFNC Located at 5750 Magnolia Parkway, the DFNC features a variety of interactive exhibits. Visitors to the Center can hear nocturnal animal sounds, see native wildlife on display, learn about birds common to Pearland and interact with items from nature. Nature Explorer Packs- -backpacks filled with guides and tools to help explore the surrounding outdoor environments--are available for check-out at the front desk. The Center also provides access to about 1.75 miles of trails and State-regulated fishing opportunities at the two ponds on site.

NATURAL RESOURCES
EDUCATIONAL POND Funded by the Pearland Rotary Club and the Forever Parks Foundation, the new educational pond outside the Delores Fenwick Nature Center provides great opportunities for education and engagement. With a gentle slope to the water’s edge, the pond is easily accessible to all visitors, providing a close and clear view of what our natural pond habitats look like when undisturbed. A series of shallow shelves provide areas for native plants to grow and those plants help to create a habitat for a variety of animal species. When viewing the pond, you can expect to see wetland plants, fish species, insects and other invertebrates and maybe even some birds and turtles! SHADOW CREEK RANCH NATURE TRAIL – PRAIRIE RESTORATION The Shadow Creek Ranch Nature Trail is a great place to explore nature and see a variety of local wildlife right here in Pearland. Recently, a large-scale habitat restoration project was initiated to bring back the historical prairie that once thrived prior to land use conversions and invasions of non-native plants took control. A prairie habitat once dominated the greater Houston landscape but in recent years has suffered a tremendous loss through factors such as urbanization, farming, invasive species and lack of management. Returning this site back to prairie will help provide a much needed habitat for countless animals including pollinators, birds and more.
JOHN HARGROVE ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLEX ROOKERY
A rookery is a site where many birds group together to breed and nest, often seeking out islands as a refuge from predators. Pearland is fortunate to have one of these critical sites within the John Hargrove Environmental Complex (JHEC). Every year around late May, the colony is counted in conjunction with the Texas Colonial Waterbird Survey. This survey is conducted during a two-week period across the state to best count all know rookery sites in Texas. These sites are heavily monitored because they support many species that require unique conditions and whose populations have declined. The JHEC site supports nine species of colonial waterbirds including Neotropic Cormorant, Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Little Blue Heron, Tricolored Heron, Cattle Egret, White Ibis and Roseate Spoonbill. During the 2020 survey, 446 nests were counted at JHEC. Keep in mind that each nest represents a breeding pair of adults and two to five chicks. That’s a lot of birds!
