Studying polyps
Professor Mark Molloy
Professor Molloy’s research aims to improve follow-up care after positive bowel cancer screening results. Current surveillance colonoscopy guidelines are based largely on polyp size and appearance, despite growing demand for colonoscopy services and limited evidence supporting existing timelines. By analysing tissue samples from patients undergoing colonoscopy, his team identified several genes linked to higher bowel cancer risk, independent of polyp size. They are now investigating whether these genetic markers can predict future polyp development and help prioritise high-risk patients for earlier follow-up procedures.
