Offering quality care to our patients is about more than the treatment Horizon PT’s physical therapists provide. It starts when a patient calls our office or walks in the door. We aim to create a comfortable, welcoming environment where everyone feels valued. Setting that positive first impression — and doing so much more — is my incredible admin team (composed of Jenean, Bryonna, Noora, and Melissa). Jenean has been with Horizon PT since the beginning; I hired her for a part-time position only a few months after the clinic opened. We took to each other immediately, and I felt excited that we were both looking for a long-term professional relationship. She wanted the ability to grow in her role, so I’ve done my best to ensure she has progressed and taken on more responsibilities over the years. She is now Horizon PT’s patient services manager and is responsible for everything that happens at the front desk. Jenean has worked incredibly hard to get where she is today — and she is critical to our daily operations. It has been a joy to watch her learn new skills, grow as a person, and find new ways to serve the clinic and our patients. Our other three admins are relatively new to the company but have quickly become essential parts of the team. They all came on board when I was refining the hiring process for our front staff to ensure we have the best of the best representing us. Bryonna was our first hire under that system. Bryonna came to Horizon PT with experience in a dental office, and she stepped up and assumed her new role here at record speed. She has taken the bull by the horns from day one, and I can always count on her to get the job done. Bryonna is currently attending school to become a stenographer, so I know she won’t be here forever. But I’m thrilled she’s a part of our team now, and I know she’ll be successful at anything she chooses to do in life. Noora had never worked in the medical field before, but her scores on our pre-employment screenings were off the charts. I knew right away that I had to give her a chance. And I’m so glad I did! Noora has worked so hard since starting here, and she’s excellent with our patients. Her phone voice and Friendly Faces AND SO MUCH MORE!

etiquette are unmatched, and she knows when to empathize with our clients and when they need a bit of tough love. I look forward to watching her grow into her role further. Melissa is our most recent addition to Horizon PT, and she impressed me immediately with her willingness to work. When we offered her a part-time position, she immediately told us she would work additional hours or take on more tasks as needed. “I’m here to help you how you need to be helped,” she said. It’s a wonderful attitude, and I admire Melissa’s determination to learn and go above and beyond for the team and our patients. For Administrative Professionals Day on April 27, I’m happy to shoutout our incredible team. As our clinic continues to grow, the challenge will become finding more admins who can do the job as well as my exceptional staff already does. In the meantime, I know I can count on them to take care of you and the business.

TRY THE NORDIC DIET! Need a Nutritional Boost?

Every other month, new dieting fads seem to be taking the world by storm. Some popular diets aren’t beneficial, while others have incredible health benefits, so how do people know what’s worth trying? Luckily, there’s one recent diet out there that may be a little bit more credible than the rest: the Nordic diet. Nutritionists, scientists, and chefs decided to create this diet in 2004 to help slow obesity rates and unsustainable farming practices in Nordic countries, but it might help residents of the U.S., too! The Nordic diet emphasizes consuming food high in protein, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Fruits, vegetables, and seafood are common on Nordic diet menus, but what separates the Nordic diet from the others is that it uses canola oil, which has less saturated fat than olive oil and other processed options. You’re supposed to eat a decreased amount of sugar and twice the amount of fiber and seafood than a typical diet. Some phenomenal physical health benefits come with switching over to the Nordic diet. It helps reduce inflammation throughout the

body and can even reduce your risk of getting Type 2 diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Many people who tried the diet noticed decreased cholesterol and lower blood pressure while they followed these guidelines, even saying they lost weight or had an easier time staying in shape. You may have seen the Nordic diet on the news after Noma, a three-Michelin-star restaurant known for its Nordic menu, recently closed in Copenhagen. Food critics and patrons rated this restaurant as one of the best in the world, but the owner found the grueling hours and intense workplace culture unsustainable. So, still wanting to work in the food industry, he converted Noma into a food laboratory. You can change and improve your diet anytime, but experts are recommending the Nordic diet for its many health benefits. Make sure you pick up whole grains, fruits, vegetables, fatty fish, and other items next time you go to the grocery store. You’ll be amazed how what you eat can improve how you feel.

SUCCESS STORIES! “I had some issues with my right shoulder. It was hard for me to move it in certain directions and lift it. I was concerned it could be something serious that may require surgery, but when I consulted with Dr. Adams at Horizon Physical Therapy, he assured me they’d be able to get my shoulder strength back without surgery, and that’s exactly what they did. Ashley worked with me the entire time, and I enjoyed being there and talking with the friendly staff and patients. I almost wish I could keep coming as if it was a gym membership, but I would definitely recommend anyone in need of physical therapy to pay Horizon a visit.”

“After searching several physical therapy clinics, I chose this one because of the friendliness, the cleanliness, and the niceness of the staff. Even though I was here for therapy, it was enjoyable because it didn’t make me feel like I was another number or a piece of furniture. We had fun and the patients, and I developed good rapport with each other, and we look forward to coming to our sessions. I would recommend it to everybody.” –Dyonne M. –Ian A.

Your Dog Didn’t Eat This Homework YES, YOUR HOME EXERCISE PLAN MATTERS!

Few of us enjoyed homework as children, and we assume we’ve left it behind once we finish school. So, it’s perhaps no surprise that the “homework” physical therapists assign to their patients will often go uncompleted. Research shows that only approximately 35% of patients comply with their home exercise plan (HEP). Patients have many reasons for letting their HEP fall by the wayside. Many feel they don’t have enough time to work their exercises into their schedule. Others struggle to feel motivated to move when they’re in pain. Some simply hate exercise. Finally, many patients don’t feel their homework is necessary and believe their in-person physical therapy appointments should be enough for them to heal. We get it — life is busy, and pushing yourself usually isn’t fun. But while the reasons people choose not to follow their HEP are understandable, patients who opt out of their homework do so to their own detriment. Complying with your HEP produces faster results and a fuller recovery. Your physical therapist designs your HEP to suit your specific needs. The at-home exercises they assign are for your benefit and will reduce pain, swelling, or inflammation, improve your balance or mobility, or work to prevent further injury. By avoiding these exercises, you’re missing out on a crucial part of the healing process.

Many people think, “But that’s why I go to my appointments.” Of course, the work we do with our patients in the office is critical. These longer sessions allow our physical therapists to ensure you’re performing your exercises correctly, monitor your progress, and provide services you can’t get at home. But a PT’s work alone is insufficient. Participating in physical therapy 2–3 times a week — without work

at home — will not allow your body to build the muscle memory that’s crucial for you to improve over time.

And your at-home work doesn’t necessarily end when your physical therapy appointments do. Many patients will continue a HEP after healing to maintain the strength needed to avoid re-injury. By performing these exercises, you can

save yourself future pain, time, and money associated with treatment.

If you’re having trouble sticking to your HEP, let your physical therapist know as soon as possible. They can create strategies with you to make your homework easier to manage. Our goal at Horizon PT is to help you succeed — no matter what it takes.

Why You Should Do Your Homework

Let’s Go Fly a Kite!

Flying a kite is a quintessential spring activity, especially for children. But if you struggled to keep your kite in the air as a kid, you’re not alone. Fortunately, you can use a few simple tricks to significantly improve your skills — and help your child become the best kite-flier on the block. Find the right spot. Hopefully, it goes without saying that you shouldn’t fly kites near power lines. Flying it near trees and cars is also a bad idea. It’s best to have at least a quarter-mile open space around you for safety and the best wind conditions. Beaches, empty sports fields, and parks with wide open areas are the perfect places to get your kite airborne. Have the wind at your back . Literally! This position will allow you to watch your kite as it ascends into the air. On a sufficiently windy day, simply holding the kite up by its lowest point and letting go as you unspool your string will be enough to launch it into the sky. When it’s not windy enough for your kite to take flight, try a long-line launch by unspooling about 50 feet of string in a straight line and then taking off running. Remember that kite-flying simply won’t work on some days. If your kite keeps crashing tail first, it may indicate too little wind, while a head-first kite fall may mean too strong a breeze. Keep it tight. Launching your kite is usually the trickiest part of the process, but keeping it aloft isn’t always straightforward. To ensure your kite stays in the air, you must retain tension on the string — but not too much. It’s time to reel out some of the line when the kite begins to tug. But too much string can weigh down your kite and bring it back to earth. When your line starts to slack, slowly spool it in until it feels taut. Keep your eyes on your kite and your mind on the reel, and you’ll be flying like a pro in no time.
