8.SEPTEMBAR / SEPTEMBER 1504.

MICHELANGELO’S DAVID UNVEILED TO THE PUBLIC One of the world’s most beloved artworks, David, the 5.17-metre-tall, more than six-ton marble masterpiece sculpted by Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simo- ni, known simply as Michelangelo, was revealed to the public on Florence’s Piazza della Signoria. Carved from a single block of white Italian Carrara marble that had been rejected by other artists for being flawed, the ma- ssive statue depicts a nude David, the Biblical hero who used a slingshot to slay the giant Goliath. Upon its unvei- ling to the Cathedral Vestry Board, a committee – whose members included Leonardo da Vinci and Sandro Botti- celli – decided that the statue should be placed in a mo- re public location. Once it had been decided that it wo- uld reside in the piazza, it took a reported 40 men four days to move the massive statue less than a kilometre. In 1873, after almost 400 years, David was moved indoors, to the Galleria dell’Accademia, in order to protect it from damage. A replica remains in its place on the piazza.
