O ne of the most anticipated Hollywood events of this year is definitely the widely heralded premiere of Ridley Scott's film House of Gucci. Inspired by the shock- ing true story of the family empire that spawned this Italian fashion house, the film sheds light on what led to a tragic outcome that filled newspaper columns for a long time - three decades of love, betrayal, decadence, revenge... And ultimately murder. The five letters of the universally recognisable surname Gucci, which immediately evokes associations with unprec- edented Italian chic among fashion lovers, are none- theless much more than the impressive global brand that we know today. They are a bitter reminder of what having such a surname means, how much it is worth and how much it doesn’t save - and how far the fami-

ly will go to control it. At the centre of the film's plot, just like the plot from real life, is Patrizia Reggiani, who is portrayed by Lady Gaga. Coincidentally or not, Patrizia was always known in Italy as Lady Gucci, even before she ended up in prison in 1998 after being found guilty of hiring a hitman to commit murder. Specifically, she gave a hired killer about 300,000 euros to murder her ex-husband, Maurizio Gucci. Maurizio was gunned down as he ar- rived for work at his office in Milan. Patrizia was open- ly jealous of the younger woman that her ex-husband wanted to marry, and she was also enraged that Mau- rizio was managing a fortune of $170 million that he earned after selling the family business to Bahrain-based group Investcorp. Initially sentenced to 29 years in prison, the sen-
