WORLD’S BEST DOCUMENTARIES AT BELDOCS From Spike Lee to Pink Floyd The rich programme of the 14 th edition of the Beldocs International Documentary Film Festival, from 9 th to 16 th September, will include the screening of more than 100

documentaries in Belgrade T he 9 th September open- ing of the Beldocs fes- tival, in the open-air setting of the amphi- theatre in front of the Museum of Yugoslavia, will fea- ture a screening of the film ‘Faith and Branko’. Directed by Catherine Harte, this intimate documentary follows the love and relationship of two musicians, British accordion- ist Faith Elliot and Roma violinist Branko Rosić. The domestic competition pro- gramme brings together seven of the latest documentaries made under the scope of Serbian cinematogra- phy or as co-productions with coun- tries from the region, Europe and the wider world, including two that had their world premieres at prestig- ious foreign film festivals. Arriving from the competition programme of the Rotterdam festival is the film ‘Landscapes of Resistance’ by Marta Popivoda, which depicts a journey through the memories of anti-fas- cist fighter Sonja (97), one of the first Yugoslav Partisans and one of the leaders of the resistance move- ment at Auschwitz, while Tea Lukač’s conceptual documentary ‘Roots’ ar- rives in Belgrade from the "East of the West" competition programme of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Eleven films from all corners of the world will be screened as part of the international compe- tition programme. Included amon- gst them are: Nikolay N. Viktorov's

documentary from the far north of Russia, ‘Beaumonde Scrapping / Чермет ’, about the harsh reali- ties of the struggle for secondary raw materials; the depiction of the decline of a Portuguese community in André Guiomar’s documentary ‘Our Land, Our Altar’; and the visu- ally impressive Argentine film ‘Ski’ by Manque La Banca, which depi- cts all the complexities of colonia- lism and fashion in South America. The audience will watch Vitaly Mansky’s film about Mikhail Gor- bachev entitled simply ‘Gorbachev. Heaven’, while the American film ‘David Byrne's American Utopia’, di- rected by famous filmmaker Spike Lee, follows a Broadway perfor- mance of singer-songwriter David Byrne’s famous show, which is more than a mere show and actually rep- resents a work of art with crystal- lised messages of social responsi- bility, attitudes and lessons about modern society and an order that compels the viewer to think. Beldocs provides an opportuni- ty for the audience to spend almost five hours in the darkened cinema auditorium, or four and a half hours (272 minutes, to be precise), and en- joy the documentary ‘City Hall’, in which the vivacious Frederick Weiss- man (91), who continues to make films in the tenth decade of his life, illustrates the administration of Bos- ton Mayor Marty J. Walsh. And all lovers of the music and vision of the band Pink Floyd will be interested in the film ‘Roger Wa-
