For many people, the Adriatic represents one of the world’s most beautiful seas. We certainly agree, and we also believe that those who choose to spend their summer holidays in Montenegro or Croatia will enjoy the beauty and hospitality of this part of the world. However, you need to get to know it better in order to love it even more, which is why we’re using this opportunity to present to you some in- teresting facts about the Adriatic.  The Adriatic is the most northerly part

of the Mediterranean Sea, separating the Ap- ennine and Balkan peninsulas, but also the Apennine and Dinaric mountain ranges. It is connected to the rest of the Mediterrane- an via the Strait of Otranto (a narrow mari- time passageway between the Adriatic and Ionian seas).  The Adriatic boasts over 1,300 islands, mainly located on its eastern side, i.e. the Cro- atian coast. The maximum depth is on 1,233 metres and the surface temperature of this sea varies from 24-28 degree Celsius during summer to about 10°C in winter.  The Adriatic has an average salinity of

38.30 grams per mill or, more simply stated, one kilogram of water contains about 38.30 grams of dissolved salt. It should be noted that its salinity is somewhat strong- er in the southern part than in the north.  The islands of Krk and Cres are the largest in the Adriatic Sea, each of which covers an area of 405.78km2. The highest peak on its islands is Vidova gora (Mount St. Vid) on the island of Brač, reaching an elevation of 780 metres.
