NIŽNJI NOVGOROD Nižnji Novgorod nalazi se na ušću Oke i Volge i po veličini je peti grad u Rusiji. Od 1932. do 1990. godine zvao se Gorki, u čast pisca Maksima Gorkog. Grad je, inače, veliki industrijski i pri- vredni centar. U sedištu se nalazi Kremlj, utvrđen kompleks, glavni politički i istorijski centar grada. NIZHNY NOVGOROD Nizhny Novgorod lies at the point where the River Oka empties into the Volga. Russia’s fifth largest city, from 1932 to 1990 it was known as Gorky, in honour of local writer Maxim Gorky. The city is a large industrial and busi- ness hub. At its heart is the Kremlin, a forti- fied central complex that houses the main political institutions of the city and district, and which represents the city’s historical centre. ROSTOV Rostov na Donu se nalazi na jugu Rusije, 46 kilometara od ušća Dona u Azovsko more. Jedan je od najve- ćih gradova evropske Rusije i tako- đe je poznat kao vrata Kavkaza. Za- nimljivo, Rostovu je pristupačno čak pet mo- ra: Azovsko, Kaspijsko, Crno, Baltič- ko i Belo. Grad je podignut 1749. godine ka- ko bi štitio ruske trgovačke puteve. Sada je politički, kulturni i privred- ni centar južne Rusije, ima veliku že- lezničku stanicu i važan međunarod- ni aerodrom. ROSTOV-ON-DON Rostov-on-Don is port city in the south of Russia, 46 kilometres from the point where the River Don emptied into the Sea of Azov. One of the largest cities in the Europe- an part of Russia, it is also known as the Gateway to the Caucasus. Interestingly, the port of Rostov-on-Don can access as many as five seas: Sea of Azov, Caspian Sea, Black Sea, Baltic Sea and White Sea. The city was established in 1749 to pro- tect Russian trade routes. It is now the political, cultural and eco- nomic centre of southern Russia, boast- ing a large railway station and an impor- tant international airport.
SARANSK Saransk je glavni grad republike Mor- dovije i nalazi se u basenu Volge, na ušću reka Saranka i Insar. Osnovan je 1641. godine. Stadion u tom gradu zove se Mordovija arena i građen je od 2010. godine specijalno za potrebe Svetskog prvenstva. SARANSK Saransk is the capital city of the Russian Republic of Mordovia. Located in the Volga basin, it lies at the confluence of the rivers Saranka and Insar. Founded in 1641, the stadium in this city - Mordo- via Arena – was built specifically for the purposes of this year’s world cup, with construction commencing back in 2010.
SOČI Ovaj grad se nalazi u Krasnodarskom kraju, na obali Crnog mora, i jedno je od omiljenih letovališta u Rusiji. Blizu je granice sa Gru- zijom, a bio je domaćin Zimskih olimpijskih igara 2014. godine. Za ovu oblast se dugo vodila borba, od 6. do 15. veka je pripadala kraljevini Abhaziji i još se mogu naći tragovi vizantijskog uticaja. Turci su ovu oblast pre- uzeli u 15. veku, da bi Soči posle uspešnog rata pod rusku vlast prešao 1829. godine. I dalje se mogu naći parkovi i arhitektura u socrealističkom stilu. Soči godišnje poseti čak četiri miliona turista. VOLGOGRAD Ovaj grad nosi posebnu titulu kao grad he- roj, jer se u njemu odigrala čuvena Staljin- gradska bitka. Od osnivanja 1589, pa do 1925. godine, zvao se Caricin, a do 1961. Staljingrad, kada počinje brisanje svih Sta- ljinovih tragova i uklanjanje svih njegovih spomenika, a grad postaje Volgograd, po reci na kojoj se nalazi.
SOCHI Located in the Krasnodar Krai region, on the coast of the Black Sea, Sochi is one of Russia’s most popular summer holiday destinations. Close to the border with Georgia, it is known for having hosted the 2014 Win- ter Olympics. This area was fought over for a long time. From the 6 th to the 15 th centuries it belonged to the kingdom of Abkhazia, and traces of Byzantine influ- ence can still be found there today. The Ottoman Turks took control of the area in the 15th century, until a suc- cessful military campaign brought Sochi under Russian authority in 1829. Stalinist style parks and architecture can still be found there today. Sochi is visited annually by as many as four million tourists. VOLGOGRAD This city carries the special title of“Hero City”, which it earned for its resistance during the infa- mous WWII Battle of Stalingrad. It was known as Tsaritsyn from its establishment in 1589 until 1925, then - until 1961 - it was named Stalingrad, after which the erasing of all traces and monuments to Stalin began and the city was renamed Volgograd, after the river upon which it is situated.
