COLOSSEUM AND FORUM: GLORY, CRUELTY, POWER In this world-famous arena, the symbol of the impressive design of this city, the sand constantly smelled of blood. For the 390 years that it was in use, 400,000 people and a million animals were killed in the Colosseum, mostly for entertainment. On the other hand, in contrast, immediately beside this venue is the Roman Forum, the centre of the political, legal, economic, cultural and religious life of ancient Rome. TRASTEVERE WITHOUT A MAP Once a neighbour- hood that was home to working class residents, its
cobblestoned streets and an- cient houses today make it the most charming part of the city.
Crammed with bars and restaurants featuring funky interiors, it is an ideal place for walking without a map, explor- ing street music and discovering medi- eval Rome, walls covered with climb- ing ivy, mini squares, but also some mini palaces.
SNACKS AND SIPS Italian food is simple, prepared from fresh, local ingredients. Chefs gladly share their rec- ipes, as they are simple – it is the techniques that are difficult to master and preserve. Thin and crisp pizza dough, homegrown tomatoes, fresh oregano and the aroma of mozzarella are felt at every step in Rome. You can find wonderful food in the expensive restaurants of Piazza Navona, but also on regular city markets. Travellers with a modest budget can buy excellent and inexpensive Prosecco from a supermarket and drink it while sitting beside the famous Trevi Fountain. For dessert, as everyone knows, is gelato.
