TRG DEL POPOLO
PEOPLE’S SQUARE (PIAZZA DEL POPOLO)
completed by Bernini. The chapel contains one statue that indicates the next destina- tion for Robert and his team, leading them to the very heart of Catholicism.
When they arrived in the “People’s Square”, Robert Langdon knew immediately that they were in the right place. In the middle of one of the largest Roman squares, which is surrounded by three churches, stands an Egyptian obelisk brought during the time of Octavius Augustus Caesar. Also located there is an old Roman gate that formed part of the so-called Aurelian Walls. Most importantly for our story, on the periphery of this square stands the Parish Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo, a church that was built over the buri- al place of Emperor Nero. If you visit, you will see the Chigi Chapel, the second chapel on the left, which was designed by Raphael and

The second murder occurs on Rome’s most famous square. Another cardinal is dead, and we acquaint ourselves with the famous square and the church of St. Peter. Along- side an Egyptian obelisk, four rows of mas- sive pillars and two fountains, the square is also adorned by 16 oval tiles embedded in the ground around the obelisk, marking the so-called wind rose, which point to the next key on the Path of Enlightenment. Bernini is responsible for the shape of the square, the surrounding pillars, one of the two fountains and parts of the interior of the world’s largest church (23,000m2), which includes works by many prominent artists, even Michelangelo. The basilica was erected on the tomb of St. Peter, while many prominent figures were buried in the catacombs, the most recent of whichwasPopeJohnPaulIIin2005.Thebeau- tiful dome of the church can be reached via a narrow staircase. If you manage to climb to the top, you will be rewarded with the gift of one of the most beautiful views of Rome.
