HADRIAN’S MAUSOLEUM (CASTEL SANT’ANGELO)
This castle, presented in the book as the headquarters of the Illuminati secret socie- ty, is actually the mausoleum of Roman Em- peror Hadrian, built in the middle of the sec- ond century AD. It was the tallest building in Rome at one point, while today it is a mu- seum that you simply must visit. The castle is accessed via a bridge featuring ten sculp- tures of angels, all of which are works of the great Bernini. At the very top of the building, another statue of an angelic figure can clear- ly be seen holding a sword pointed towards the centre of the castle, which indicates – as far as the author is concerned – that we are undoubtedly in the right place. This castle has saved the heads of many popes through- out history, as it is located only a kilometre from the Vatican and is connected to it via underground passages. It has also been a scene of terrible suffering. Giordano Bruno was imprisoned here for six years, Galileo chose this place to announce his theory that the sun is at the centre of the galaxy, while composer Giacomo Puccini chose it for the site of the last scene of his opera Tosca. It is dedicated to the Archangel Michael, who ap- peared during prayers and announced the end of the time of the plague.

Do zamka vodi most na kojem se nalazi deset anđeoskih skul- ptura, a sve su dela Berninija. Na samom vrhu zdanja nalazi se- još jedna statua anđeoskog obličja, koja drži mač uperen ka centru za- mka, ukazujući da smo, što se tiče pis- ca, na pravom mestu. Tvrđava je kroz istoriju spasavala glave mnogim pa- pama jer je od Vatikana udaljena sa- mo kilometar i sa njim je povezana podzemnim prolazima. Bila je i me- sto strašnih stradanja. Tu je šest go- dina bio utamničen Đordano Bruno, tu je Galilej obznanio svoju heliocen- tričnu teoriju, a kompozitor Đakomo Pučini smestio poslednju scenu To- ske. Posvećena je arhanđelu Mihaj- lu, koji se javio tokom molitve i ob- znanio da je vreme kuge završeno.
