Z vonik visok skoro 99 metara reći će vam da se nalazite na pravom mestu. Na Trgu Sve- tog Marka, jedinom koji ima tu čast da ga u Veneciji zovu trgom (piazza), svi ostali su tek polja, koja Italijani zovu kampi (campi). Odatle milioni turista iz celog sveta kreću u šetnju lavirin- tima Venecije bez straha da će se izgubiti jer, kažu, u Veneciju ne treba ni dolaziti ako se u njoj nećete izgubiti. Ali pre nego što nastave dalje, turisti opko- ljeni golubovima, po kojima je Trg Svetog Marka ta- kođe čuven, ostaju zadivljeni bazilikom, za koju kažu da je jedna od najfascinantnijih italijanskih katedrala. Njeni počeci vezuju se za 9. vek, kada je naprav- ljena kao kapelica, i to da bi posmrtni ostaci Svetog Marka u njoj mogli da budu sahranjeni. A priča o to- me kako je ovaj apostol stigao u Veneciju takođe je veoma zanimljiva, pa se graniči sa legendom. Nai- me, pripoveda se da posle njegove smrti u Aleksan- driji vlasti nisu dozvolile da bude prenet u Veneciju, pa su njegovo telo ukrali mletački trgovci. Prokrijum- čarili su ga ispod gomile svinjskom mesa, na koje su se muslimanski carinici zgadili, pa je tako ovaj svetac stigao u Veneciju. It is from here that millions of tourists from all over the world embark upon walking tours around the labyrinthine Venice, without fear of getting lost, because, as they say, you shouldn’t come to Venice if you don’t want to get lost there. How- ever, before they move on, the tourists surrounded by the pigeons for which St. Mark’s Square is also known are left awestruck by the basilica known as one of the most fas- cinating Italian cathedrals. And the story of how this Apostle ar- rived in Venice is also very interesting and bordering on legend. Specifically, it is recounted that after his death in Alexandria, the authorities did not permit the transfer- ring of his body to Venice, so it was stolen by Venetian merchants. They smuggled him under a pile of pork that disgusted the Muslim customs, and so this saint arrived in Venice. But not before he appeared to sailors aboard the ship and told the captain to lower the sails during a great storm, which saved them from certain death. All
