Communication and Language Communication and language is embedded in
Personal, Social and Emotional Development Now the children are settled into the Nursery environment the staff are working on supporting the children to develop social skills through turn taking activities, sharing and games. The children will have developed relationships with the adults and children, they will become more aware of the needs of others and will be encouraged to think of solutions to conflicts. The children are expected to be polite and use their manners by saying please and thank you. Literacy We will be reading a range of fiction and non-fiction texts. We will discuss the difference between the two and explain that the children can use non-fiction texts to find out information. The children will begin to talk about the character, setting and events in stories and will be asked to predict what might happen next. The children will be provided with a range of opportunities for writing during child initiated time, this can be large mark making such as using chalks on the playground or writing on paper or in foam or sand. Physical Development The children will be increasingly independent and will be expected to put their coat on, put jumpers on and off and put their shoes on with support. Children will be aware of the need for good personal hygiene and will begin to understand the need for exercise, oral health and healthy eating. Gross motor skills will be developed through progressive skills in PE; this is taught through a story. The children practice a range of movements and positions to develop their flexibility and control of movement. Fine motor activities such as lacing, jigsaws and using scissors will also be developed. everything we do in Nursery. Staff provide the children with lots of opportunities to speak but also to listen. We give children instructions, ask questions, and encourage discussions. We also expect the children to verbally make their needs known and use speech to ask for things that they want such as ‘Can I have the bike please?’ We aim to increase the children’s voc abulary through reading a variety of texts both fiction and non-fiction, learning nursery rhymes and through Word Aware.

Phonics & early reading During phonics sessions and through child-initiated activities, we will continue to develop the children’s listening skills. We will be learning a nursery rhyme every week to encourage an understanding of rhythm and rhyme through song. We regularly read to the children and will be reading a range of fiction and non- fiction books related to our topics. The children will also have the opportunity to bring home a library book to enjoy with their families.
During this term we will learn lots of Nursery Rhymes, both old and new. We will begin to join in with rhyming activities and songs. The children will explore colour through fun activities such as going on a colour hunt and using different media and materials to make colour collages. We will learn through stories, using the vocabulary of story sequencing and thinking of our own stories or endings. We will go on a trip to the local library and share lots of the children’s favourite stories from home and different cultures too.

Mathematics During this term we will continue to explore numbers and shapes in the environment, we will also begin to compare quantities of objects and use vocabulary such as more/ less/ same. We will provide the children with many opportunities to record numbers and understand quantity using a range of resources such as Numicon, natural objects and large scale objects such as blocks. The children will use a variety of resources to explore and manipulate shapes, this will include building models, problem solving puzzles and pattern. Understanding the World The children have access to a range of technology both old and new during child initiated learning and group times. They are encouraged to explore how things work and find out about different technology through play. We continue to talk to the children about their families and experiences, they will have the opportunity to share their news/ bring in objects for show and tell to talk to their teachers and peers during group time. We celebrate what makes us all different and unique through following the children’s interests and providing a balance of activities to reflect this. ‘
Characteristics of effective teaching & learning The children will be encouraged to develop their concentration and attention skills through a range of challenges. This will promote independence, perseverance and a positive attitude to facing something that is not easy to complete. We encourage the children to have their own ideas and to explore open ended activities and resources. The children are able to use the resources freely to extend their own learning and to use objects in the environment to support independent learning. Expressive Arts and Design The children will explore a range of media and materials, they will combine materials and techniques to produce individual and group pieces of work. Children will use tools for a purpose and understand the importance of safety when using equipment such as scissors. The children will explore colour, including colour mixing, they will also use a range of resources to make props, such as puppets for their play and stories. We will move to music and develop stories through role play and drama.

Physical development In P.E. children will be using story to practise large and small movements which develop core strength. This builds on skills previously developed in Nursery and the Autumn Term and includes kneeling, balancing, forward and backwards weight transference. They will be developing fine motor skills through different activities such as mark making and pencil control, cutting and painting. Children will talk about and practise making healthy choices related to exercise, eating, sleeping, oral health and hygiene. achievements through small group activities, which will develop their listening and questioning skills. They will continue to build their vocabulary using concept words that are more complex such as ‘shorter’ and ‘through’. This will also support them to give facts about specific subjects such as wild animals and dinosaurs and describe habitats. Communication and language Children will participate in circle time discussions, role play opportunities, ask questions about the stories we read and re-tell stories. Our topic is ‘ Long Ago and Far Away ’ with a focus on ‘In the w ild ’ and ‘ Dinosaurs ’. Through this topic w e will be building on children’s previous knowledge of animals and dinosaurs developing specific vocabulary. We will talk about different animals and the environments that they live in. During this term we will; create Jungle masks in our ‘Let’s Do It’ day, dress up as animals for our Jungle Party , have a very special ‘Animal Encounter’ in school where we will be meeting some animals, and we will have a Dinosaur Explorer Day. We are also planning a trip to a local church.
Phonics & early reading Children will be applying their phonic knowledge to segment and blend words (e.g. sh-i-p, t-r-ee, b-oi-l, b-r- oo-m,) and will recognise more tricky words (e.g. all, are, my, her) in sentences. Children will begin to read simple short sentences by using sound talk where appropriate. Children will spell and write out CVC words and begin to include tricky words in short sentences that they can begin to read themselves. Children will be encouraged to use their phonic knowledge to attempt to write more unfamiliar words.

Literacy Our ‘Talk for Writing’ story ‘ The Selfish Crocodile ’ is fun, memorable and exposes the children to descriptive language that can be used in their writing. Our ‘Dinosaur Factfile’ is informative and encourages the children to use technology to support their writing. We will also be learning the story ‘The Somethingosaur’ in’ Talk for Writing’. We introduce three new concepts per week for children to learn and also introduce key words to use in our shared writes. Children are given the opportunity to explore both indoor and outdoor environments to mark make, form letters and write their own sentences alongside many opportunities to develop reading and phonic skills. Mathematics Children will be looking at position and understanding the language related to space and position. They will be working with numbers to 10, comparing numbers to 10 and then moving onto addition to 10. Children will investigate measuring, working on length, height and weight in practical, hands on experiences. This builds on the work in Nursery by extending vocabulary of space and measure. Children use this language to order and measure items. Children will be learning about Number bonds to 10, then moving on to subtraction. They will then be exploring patterns.

In our music sessions the children will be finding different ways to keep a steady pulse and explore rhythms using a variety of instruments. Children will be looking at the work of the Tanzanian artist Edward Tinga Tinga and they will be creating their own paintings of animals in the wild based on his work. Children will be using a range of paints, pastels and other resources to create observational drawings of plants and animals. They will be creating their own props to aid their role-play using a variety of resources. This will include; planning their ideas, using materials to create and evaluating their choices.
Children will be given opportunities to talk about making good choices and how they feel when they achieve their goals including steps that they could take to accomplish a task. Children will demonstrate what they can do and develop their self-confidence to persevere when challenges occur. They will also become more aware of the perspectives of others and how they can help others understanding that everyone needs help sometimes. Understanding the world Children will talk about their favourite animals and why they are special to them. There will be opportunities to engage in a jungle themed role play. They will learn that humans and other animals can grow including exploring the life cycles of different animals. Children will also be learning about David Attenborough and how his important work has helped improve our understanding of the natural world and many animal species. Children will explore the natural world describing what they see, hear and feel outside. Children will know the names of common fruits and vegetables and sort healthy and less healthy foods. They will begin to comment on images of familiar situations in the past and they will find out about Christians celebrating Easter.

Maths This half term, the children will be developing their understanding of numbers to 50, applying their knowledge of addition and subtraction to larger numbers and more complex number problems. Their learning will be supported through a variety of practical resources, including tens frames, number lines and base 10. This will secure the children’s initial understanding before moving towards a more abstract approach. The children will then be introduced to length and height and will take part in activities requiring them to compare and measure objects. They will also develop an understanding of weight and capacity, making comparisons and using non-standard units of measurement such as cubes and cups.

Computing We will learn how to use technology safely and respectfully, discussing our SMART message on a regular basis in order to raise awareness. The children will understand what is meant by ‘technology’ and will look at how technology is used both in school and beyond. In Spring 2, time will be spent using technology to draw and create. They will look at the difference between traditional books and eBooks and will then use Purple Mash to produce their own simple eBook story. Science The children’s knowledge and skills will be developed through our unit of work on famous scientists and inventors. There will be lots of opportunity for the children to develop their ability to work scientifically by performing simple tests, observing closely and using these observations to suggest answers to questions. A visit from Sublime Science at the beginning of the term will help to spark their love for Science! During the second half of the spring term our focus will turn to plants, looking at their basic structure and what they need to grow and stay healthy. We will also be identifying and naming common plants, including trees, and learn about the terms deciduous and evergreen. English During this term, the children will have the opportunity to explore a variety of texts and genres. The children will start off by learning a set of instructions and will then explore a non-chronological report, traditional tales and leaflets. These texts will allow children to understand the key features required in order to be able to write in different styles. Children will also be taught how to use and apply different punctuation within their writing such as exclamation and question marks. They will also be using a variety of sentence types, as well as using coordinating conjunctions and time conjunctions to join sentences together.
Our topic is Famous Scientists and Inventors. Through this topic we will be teaching History, Science and Design and Technology. This topic is about knowing and understanding the importance of significant people who have had a positive impact upon our world. Each week our History lessons will introduce the children to a famous scientist/inventor. We will then use this lesson as a basis for our science lessons, providing the children with plentiful opportunity to work like scientists themselves - predicting, investigating, observing and recording. In Spring 2, as part of our Walt Disney focus, our Design and Technology lessons will see the children designing their very own moving carriage. They will evaluate existing products, design their very own and have a day to bring their carriage to life!
Music
During Spring 1 the children will be exploring sounds! This will include high and low sounds, long and short sounds, and loud and quiet sounds. Through exploring these, they will create their own simple melodies. In Spring 2 the spotlight will be on learning to listen, thinking about the world, their communities and their relationships with others. Singing and listening are at the heart of each lesson and they will play, improvise and compose using a selection of these notes: C, D, E, F, G, A The children will learn to play an instrument to the beat of a song and compositions will be created using symbols. To accompany our Walt Disney focus, Spring 2 will see the children learning and singing songs from Disney films. The children will be accompanying some of the songs with percussion instruments. Geography History will be the main focus for this term, with Geography skills being addressed in the Summer term.
History Through our topic, the children will be further developing the autumn term skills spanning living and non-living memory, nationally and internationally. Looking at a range of scientists/inventors such as Stephanie Kwolek, Alexander Graham Bell, Tim Berners-Lee and Maggie Aderin-Pocock to name a few. The children will gain an understanding of why they are so significant and the impact that their inventions/discoveries have on our lives today. Spring 2 develops these skills further through a focus on the American entrepreneur, animator and film producer, Walt Disney. Pupils find this highly engaging and it is a relevant line of study due to their age and stage of development. The skills of using historical vocabulary related to the passing of time, asking questions about the past and using sources to find answers, and understanding chronology, will all be developed over the term. Art & Design The children will be experimenting with colour mixing: using primary colours to create secondary colours, adding white to create tints and adding black to create shades of colour. Kandinsky is studied as a famous artist. They will make use of the colour mixing skills they have acquired
PE
Design Technology In the second half of the term the children will be designing a moving vehicle, perhaps for Cinderella or the Prince! They will begin by looking at wheels, axles and chassis and evaluating existing designs. They will then use this knowledge to design their own vehicle using a template. A range of materials and fixings will be used to help bring their design to life, and parents will be invited into school to work alongside their child in the construction of their moving vehicle. A great opportunity to develop those all-important soft skills of decision making, creativity and problem solving. There will be a focus on Games in Spring 1, to master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching. We will also be working on developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities. Children will participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending. Spring 2 will see the focus shift to dance. The children will perform dances using a range of movement patterns in which flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance will be developed.

Religious Education
The children will be learning about Sikhism. They will be looking at stories of the 10 Sikh Gurus including the importance of Guru Nanak. Additionally, the children will explore the holy place of worship - the Gurdwara and the importance of the Langar (free kitchen). This will develop their knowledge of sharing, being kind to others and equality. A visit to a local Gurdwara, will help to bring their learning to life.

Computing Children will start the term looking at how to use the internet safely and will develop their understanding of the SMART message when online. Children will use the internet to research a chosen Australian animal. They will take notes, using the internet safely. Children will be able to cut and paste images and type into a document and then they will also learn how to spell check their finished leaflet. Children will become confident in saving their work in a folder for future use. Religious Education Children will spend the first half term looking at holy places. How do places of worship connect with what they have learnt about Christians, Muslims and Sikhs? They will then look at places of worship, prayer, symbols connect to children’s own ‘special places ’ . Children will then look at ‘ Why does Easter matter to Christians? ’ Children will recognise that ‘incarnation’ and ‘ s alvation’ are part of a ‘big story’ in the Bible. Children will learn how Christians show their beliefs about death and resurrection and connect whether they find it helpful to believe in life in heaven after death. Science The children will explore and compare the differences between things that are living, that were once alive and that have never been alive. The children compare animals from different habitats and explain why a certain habitat is suited to them. We shall be exploring desert, woodland, ocean and rainforest habitats as well as finding out about the Australian plants and animals that live there. English The focus will be on explanation texts, instructions, and story writing during this term. The children will look at the features (bare bones) and sentence types (toolkit) that are needed to create a set of instructions and then use these to write their own set of instructions for a gruesome potion for George’s grandma . The explanation text will focus on ‘A Teacher Pleaser Machine’. Discrete lessons will also be taught covering spelling, use of punctuation and correct grammar (SPaG) as well as developing their comprehension skills through whole class reading sessions. There will also be regular comprehension sessions.
Maths There will be a focus on methods that can be used to solve division and apply this knowledge with the related multiplication facts. The children will be identifying and describing the properties of both 2D and 3D shapes. We will also be learning about statistics, where the children will be showing and interpreting information in different ways such as; tally charts, pictograms and block diagrams. There will also be the opportunity to use units of measure such as centimetres and metres when discussing and comparing length and height. The children will have the opportunity to use practical resources to develop their understanding of mathematical concepts and will be encouraged to provide reasons for their thinking. Music During this term the children will look at Rock music. Children will start to understand rhythms, symbols and musical notation. They will use this when learning to play simple tunes on glockenspiels. They will have the opportunity to improvise and compose within a group and also to listen to and appraise different styles of music.
Our topic is Australia! Through this topic we will be linking our Geography, Science, History, Art, Design and Technology.
This topic is all about Australia, where it is in the world and comparing it to the UK and our local area. We shall look at living things and their habitats, including both plants and animals. Children will be looking at the Australian artist Georges Seurat, leading on them creating their own piece in his style. We also look forward to inviting parents into school for a sewing project where children will be making a puppet using their sewing skills. During this term, the children will be given the opportunity to experience, using their senses, some Australian animals through an in -school animal visit.
Art & Design We will spend time finding out about, and replicating, pointillism styled Aboriginal art and learning about the French artist Georges Seurat. The children will then create a piece of Pointillism work based on one of the famous monuments in Australia, they will use a range of different media/tools to create different size dots (cotton bud, end of a paintbrush, toothpick) Design and Technology Children will design, make and evaluate a hand puppet during the second half term. They will research a range of puppets, then use CAD to design their own. Once happy with their design, they will make a paper template which will be used to create their puppet. Children will then use a running stitch to attach their pieces of material together.
Geography The children will compare and contrast similarities and differences between the UK (local area) and Australia (a non-European country) which will begin to develop their global geographical knowledge. They will explore human and physical features of the landscape of Australia and key landmarks using photographs. They will look at the contrasting climates of the world, understanding the key vocabulary of North Pole, South Pole, Equator, Hot climate, and Cold climate. We will look at how Australia is made up of states and how each state has its own capital. History Through our topic, children will have the opportunity to explore the history of Australian culture through artefacts, art and dance, looking at its significance to people today. Children will develop their ability to generate historical enquiry based questions e.g. Why do they decorate their bodies in this way and we don’t? We will also discuss the significance of Australia Day in the past and present and the significance of the different parts of the Australian and Aboriginal flags will be explored. Children will further develop their chronological understanding through studies of significant international individuals (Amy Johnson, Ibn Battuta, Ferdinand Magellan).

PE Children will develop their hand and feet control through Games and Multi-Skills. They will know how to start and stop a ball, send and receive equipment in different ways i.e. a ball under arm, rolled, bounced, bean bags to get an appropriate speed. The Dance unit is linked to the curricular theme and the cultural Aboriginal dances. Children will design and create their own sequence in the style of the extracts seen.

Music The learning for music this term is focused around songs with a diversity element. The children will explore Reggae music with a particular focus on Bob Marley. As well as learning songs, they will be playing, improvising and composing, listening and appraising music from different cultures. From the previous unit, the children will use their experience of the recorders to play alongside the music as well as the introduction of glockenspiels this term. French This term, the children will be building and expanding on previously taught language skills from last term, having a basic awareness of sentence structure in French . Throughout the unit taught (En Classe: In the Classroom), the children will be given the opportunities for speaking, listening, recall and writing short phrases and sentences more independently. They will also begin to use a glossary to support their learning.

Computing The children will be using 2Code on Purple Mash to program a series of commands to make different icons move. We will be using a sequence of programs, working with variables and various forms of inputs and outputs. They will have the opportunity to design and write programs, solve problems by breaking them into smaller groups and use logical reasoning. As a final outcome, the children will be using all of the skills to create a Superhero cartoon that will move through given commands. Art & Design The children start the unit with a visit from Mr Marshall, a caricaturist in order to start their Pop Art topic. They will compare Roy Lichtenstein to Andy Warhol and work in their style to create an individual piece. The colour wheel is used to explore tertiary colours building on their knowledge of primary and secondary colours. Linking art to our Stone Age topic, children will use their skills to recreate a cave painting after analysing existing cave paintings. They will be also experimenting with pigments from natural herbs and spices by making coloured paints. Science In Science, the children will be exploring forces; push, pull or twist and determine which is needed to make objects move. We will also be focusing on magnetism, and investigating materials and their properties. The children will be creating their own magnetic maze. In Spring 2, we will be studying different rocks, and investigating their properties by sorting and classifying them. The children will be testing the permeability and hardness of rocks and carry out some soil investigations. The children will be developing their sentence types by including fronted adverbial phrases, adverbs, similes and conjunctions. Weekly spelling tests, spelling patterns and alternatives spellings taken from the National Curriculum will be focused on. Please help your child to practise each week using Spelling Frame as an aid. English This term we will be continuing to develop our ‘Talk4Writing’, covering genres such as narratives, non- chronological reports, instructional writing and advertisements. We will be using our topic of Superheroes and The Stone Age to inspire both fiction and non-fiction writing.

Our Spring 1 topic is Superheroes. Here, the children will explore a range of diverse “ real-life superheroes” and the impact that these people have had on the wider community. They will be creating a piece of Pop Art inspired work, make a dance sequence to a piece music consisting of the basic elements (shape, form, space, time and energy) and build on existing sewing skills learnt in KS1. During Spring 2, the children will learn about an ancient civilisation; The Stone Age. They will be finding out how Stone Age people lived, what they ate, what they wore and how they developed tools. The children will be visiting ‘ Outback 2 Basics ’ for an educational visit to experience a day in the life of a Stone Age person.

PE The curricular links of Dance this half term are to the theme of superheroes. The dance will include movement to music of themed words e.g. zoom, swoop, dash, stealth along with body posture related to characteristics e.g. strong, brave along with antonyms for villains. As a final outcome we will be creating a class dance incorporating the movements developed over the half term. In Spring 2, the children will be developing their hand eye co-ordination, agility, throwing and catching skills using a competitive element in Dodgeball. We will be focussing on agility to change direction to exploit space and avoid the ball and co-ordination to throw accurately towards a target. The children will continue to develop their understanding of multiplication and division through the written column method to multiply a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number. We then move onto money where the children will learn to convert pounds to pence and add or subtract amounts. We will finish the term by using and applying mathematical skills in statistics such as bar charts and pictograms.
Religious Education This term, we will explore what it means to be a good citizen in our community and find out about the values of different religions. There is a focus on Sikhism and Islam and exploring some of the core morals of these two religions by comparing and contrasting their beliefs and values. History In the first half term, the children will explore the lives of significant individuals both present and past, who have contributed to national and international achievements. They will be comparing aspects of their lives in different periods. The second half term focusses on the culture and civilisation of the Stone Age, where the children will explore settlements and housing, culture and artwork. They will also learn about the key historical events of the Stone Age as well as developing their understanding of the terms BC, AD and prehistoric. The children will have the opportunity to handle artefacts and experience an immersive day with a Stone Age visitor.
Design Technology Year 3 will be learning how to use a range of stitching techniques to hem a cape and attach fabrics onto the cape. This links in with their Superhero topic and crosses over with what is being learnt in Art. Religious Education What do Christians Learn from the Bible’s creation stories? Children will explore the Creation story, and discuss and compare things they are proud of. They will explore what being a Christian means and will offer their thoughts and ideas. Children will also discuss the meaning of temptation and forgiveness. Why do Christians call the day Jesus died ‘Good Friday’? Children will learn about the Easter Story and why it is important to Christians and how this links to Easter eggs. the effectiveness of their choices. They will also consider what online content can be trusted. After half term we will look at using computers for data collection. We will be collecting data over time, and introduce the idea of collecting data automatically using computers. Computing During the first half of this term, we will be learning how to use digital image editing tools. The children will develop their understanding of how digital images can be changed and edited, and how they can then be resaved and reused. They will consider the impact that editing images can have, and evaluate Science Children will develop their knowledge of states of materials and will be confidently able to identify solids, liquids and gases as well as their properties through a range of investigations and fair testing. The children learn about how electricity is produced and the different components that make up a simple circuit. The children move on to investigating conductors and insulators within a simple circuit. Some children begin to draw simple circuits using some symbols. English This term we will continue to use Talk4Writing to expand the children's knowledge of text and sentence types. The genres that we will be focusing on are narrative fiction, diary and a balanced argument. There will be an emphasis on developing creative, independent and increasingly sophisticated writing along with the use of a wide range of punctuation marks and vocabulary. We will continue to develop a cursive handwriting style. In particular the children will develop their use of conjunctions, apostrophes for possession and contraction, expanded noun phrases and fronted adverbial clauses.
Mathematics
This term the children will develop their multiplication and division strategies, multiplying 2 and 3 digit numbers by a single digit number, dividing with a remainder and problem solving. We will also be looking at decimals including tenths, hundredths and dividing by ten and a hundred. Other topics will include measure of area and fractions. Throughout all the work the children will develop their fluency and reasoning skills.
Our topic is Imaginary Worlds
Through this topic we will be linking our Geography, History, Art, Design and Technology and English work. We will explore imaginary world created by famous authors and film-makers and the go on to write about and create our own imaginary worlds through diaries, encyclopaedia entries about imaginary animals and beasts and quest stories set in imaginary lands. We will discover the history of map making and how the map of the world changed with the discovery of the ‘new world’ . The children will explore artists and authors of the sci-fi genre, discuss if their ideas came true and create artwork in their style. In DT children will be creating an electrical buzzer game to link with their science work on electrical circuits. Children will also be exploring the locality of Warley Woods, completing walks and planning their routes as well as creating scale maps of their imaginary worlds and looking back through time – imagining what the woods looked like at different points in the past. Life skills developed: Being able to follow a map in a known location safely and plan a route. Children will be able to use woodwork tools safely and accurately. Bucket list opportunities: Slumber party, making slime, going to the woods. Soft skills: Able to explain personal opinions and thoughts.
French
Children will be able to present orally and confidently about ordering items within a café and naming items of clothing. Children will readily write sentences with vocabulary learnt that is easily recognisable, independently. They will be able to introduce themselves in French and write short passages about themselves.
History Children will develop their understanding of chronological order through a study of cartography and their understanding of people’s pe rceptions of the wider world and how this has changed over time and how people’s perceptions of the world would be dependent upon their location. Through following the Warley wood history trail the children will compare how land use has changed within living memory and beyond.
Geography The children will be developing their understanding of maps by studying the art of Cartography. The children look at how land use has changed over time through a local history study. They further develop their understanding of OS maps creating their own map of the immediate local area using the principles of OS mapping. The children generate their own routes to follow developing their understanding of navigation. Children begin to develop their knowledge of scaling by creating their own map of areas to a set scale.
PE All children will continue to participate in swimming lessons at Sandwell Aquatics Centre, with an emphasis on working towards swimming independently for 25 meters and on developing life preservation skills. This term we will be learning the rules of Volleyball and how to use our agility, balance and coordination to defend and challenge. We will be making a routine for our Dance topic which encompasses Imaginary Worlds. Art & Design ‘ War of the Worlds ’ is focused on when creating a movie poster using charcoal in the style of Alvim Correa. This is the first time the children use charcoal. Continuing with the same theme, a mixed media piece is produced using oil pastel, water colours and liquid tape pen. Oil pastels have been used in all previous years and the children are now starting to use them with greater control. In art this term, we will be exploring the elements of art and looking at Hundertwasser use of line and shape to create their own piece.
Music
Our unit this term focuses on Grime and lyric writing. The children are given the opportunity to work together and produce some of their own lyrics through composition, to fit with an existing song. (whole class, small groups, individual). The children are given the chance to perform these compositions. Children will also look at Gospel music and how is it made up. They will appraise and listen to examples and will be provided with opportunities to play (following sheet music) using the glockenspiel.
Design Technology
The children will begin to look at electricity in their science lessons which will include making a simple electrical circuit where the light bulb comes on. In DT children will be creating an electrical buzzer game to link with their science work on electrical circuits. They will also design, measure, cut and assemble the parts for their game.
English We will begin the term looking at different forms of poetry, where the children will be given the opportunity to write reverse poems, haikus and poems which contain metaphors and other types of figurative language. Our genres of writing covered include: persuasive writing, balanced discussion writing, newspaper reports, as well as a narrative wishing story. Within these units, children will be taught the tools needed to write successfully in each genre as well as developing their SPaG skills in these lessons. Reading will be promoted through daily guided reading, daily story time sessions as well as a weekly reading comprehension. Science In the Space topic, children will be exploring how the Solar System is made up, naming the different planets and their order from the Sun. Additionally, there is a focus on the ‘Phases of The M oon ’ . The children will be able to label the different phases and explain what happens at each phase. They will also discover how day and night is formed and why we have different seasons. This will be explained through practical equipment. In the Life cycles unit, they will be comparing a range of life cycles and identifying similarities and differences. They will be using classification keys and developing their previous knowledge of plants by exploring the functions of different parts and how they link to reproduction. The children will also learn about the changes in the human body, in particular, puberty, which involves a class discussion with class teachers and school nurses. Computing Year 5 will continue to develop their algorithm knowledge using Scratch. They will learn to use different commands before going on to design and create their own quiz. The children will also develop their skills and understanding of using vector graphics to create their own images independently. areas. Religious Education The children will continue to explore the religion of Christianity and the question ‘What would Jesus do?’ This unit links to how Christian teachings about peace and forgiveness would help people in the world today. The unit includes exploring different stories in the Bible and what lessons they teach us. Children explore ways in which Christians try to use Jesus’ words as their foundation for living using prayer, justice and turning enemies into friends. We will be exploring how this is achieved in the world today.

Mathematics We will continue our mastery approach to
mathematics developing reasoning skills, problem solving and fluency. We will begin by looking at area and perimeter. We will also be looking at a range of multiplication and division methods before moving onto fractions. The fractions unit will include, adding, subtracting and multiplying fractions as well as calculating fractions of amounts. This will then lead into looking at the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages. Children need to continue to learn their times tables up to 12 and we will continue to focus on a mathematical concept each week in arithmetic to consolidate their understanding. French This term the children will begin by learning the names of the planets and writing descriptive sentences about each planet. To deepen their knowledge, they will then discover the meaning of adjectival agreement and understand how an adjective changes depending on whether the noun is masculine, feminine, singular or plural. They will then continue to practise this skill when discussing and describing clothing. French will be taught through a range of ways including speaking and listening, translating and writing activities. P.E In Tennis (Spring 1), Children will continue to develop their agility, balance and co-ordination skills in game play. They will develop the under-arm serve to over-arm as well as changing between forehand and backhand. building up to a co- operative rally with appropriate control. In Dance (Spring 2), Children will be continuing the theme of our topic - The Tudors. They will be performing and creating sequences as groups before coming together to create a whole class dance. They will be learning and experimenting how to convey emotion through dance. Music Children will be listening and appraising music from the Old School Hip Hop genre. Our learning will be focused around the song: The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. This unit promotes the opportunity for children who play an instrument to bring it in! Others can continue to develop the use of the glockenspiel, playing multiple notes and following sheet music.
Our topic is Space (Spring 1) and The Tudors (Spring 2). Through these topics we will be linking our History, Geography, Art and Design and Design Technology.
The life skill that we will be focusing on this term is cooking. There will be an opportunity for children to design and create their own Tudor banquet. The soft skills that we will be developing are communication, teamwork, creativity and leadership skills. Our bucket list experiences for this term include a visit from an outside agency to support with the learning of the Tudors. The children will also have a workshop where they create their own Tudor houses. An experience everyone will love! More information about these topics are shown in the specific subject areas.
History Through the topic of Space children will look at significant individuals who have had an impact on our understanding of space, whilst having a brief look at the history of technological advances. In our second topic, we will be looking at a significant period of British history, the Tudor period, and the impact that it has had on British life today. We will be looking at the churches, a selection of significant monarchs and the culture from that time period. We will also explore the different viewpoints of society and how accounts can conflict with each other. Art & Design This term children will be looking Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki and the genre of Manga. The children will practice watercolour and acrylic techniques, look at how the animation is created by hand and through computed generated programmes. Children will use their techniques to create their own art. They will also develop their art appreciation, by discussing what they like and dislike about a piece of art.
Design Technology Year 5 will be designing and making their own Tudor Houses. To begin they will be exploring how Tudor houses are designed and made as well as evaluating existing designs. Before making their final product, children will be experimenting and testing a range of joining techniques safely (using glue guns, staples, glues and tapes) and then designing their own prototype. They are now becoming more independent designers and will be able to select their own appropriate materials and equipment. Geography Children will be securing their knowledge of locating continents and countries, using an atlas and interactive resources, to find Space centres across the world. They will build upon their knowledge of areas of the world from Year 2 and 4, by looking at; the lines of latitude and longitude, the Equator, the Tropics, the North and South Pole and the time zones. Children will also look at physical and human features, further developing their understanding using aerial photos of landmasses and examining how land has changed, as well as the development of maps.
