Đorđević has to date held several exhibitions in Serbia and is set to soon revisit his homeland. He expects to treat the Bel- grade audience to a new exhibition in November, while in De- cember he will travel to Smederevo, where he will present his works in the Gallery of Contemporary Art. SUPPORT OF THE GREAT ARTIST Mate says that it is very important for young artists to receive support from prominent, senior colleagues. His talent was re- cognized and supported by a member of the Serbian and Fren- ch academies of science, the painter Vladimir Veličković. - That support is important because of the misfortune that is carried by youth as such. In order for a man to become fami- liar with himself, to become that which he is, someone is also needed to understand his internal dimension. And that is to- ugh and rarely happens – adds Mate, who was actually propo- sed by Veličković for the award of the French Academy of Ar- ts in 2012.

ical aspect to the paintings, but insists he’s not so interested in the technical side of this art. They say I’m a pessimist in painting. However, that’s an aca- demic category, and all academic categories are ridiculous. A man, like all other beings, lives and attempts to be that which he does. In that case I am an artist as much as that’s possible – he notes.

INTIMATE WITH BELGRADE

The fine art story that Mate is creating in Paris today actu- ally started several decades ago in Belgrade. He developed his love for painting early on. He notes that he always“doodled with his hands, drew on paper”. He read books with fascination and was very curious. - I belong to those who grew up in a one by two room, with a fountain in the courtyard, and I’m not the only one! Under such conditions, imagination is a defence mechanism, and the more you have, the better you can ignore reality. That might sound a bit morbid, but that protected and corrected my spine – reveals Mate, who regularly visited the graphic prints and fine art sec- tions in school. - I have an intimate relationship with Belgrade. It has a spe- cial energy that is there without question, but that energy is un- directed. If we do not express our position in writing with regard to cultural trends and models, if culture does not stop being the main fashion model, then the energy will create a necropolis. He considers his victory in a competition for the best chil- dren’s caricature as his first exhibition, while his first official so- lo exhibition of paintings was held at the “Cvijeta Zuzorić” pavil- ion in 2008 – the same year that he graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Belgrade. He says that he didn’t choose painting, but rather this voca- tion chose him. And at the very beginning of his painting career he received the Drawing Award of the Vladimir Veličković Fund. That was in 2009, and it heralded a series of victories for him in Serbia and the region. That recognition, including an award at the 47 th Winter Salon in Herceg Novi for fine art and the Milan Konjović Award at the Fine Art Autumn event in Sombor, fol- lowed his international success.
