Prohor Pčinjski e hermit the Venerable Prohor of Pčinja is known to have lived there in the early 11th century. As a young man, he took up a life of abstinence as a hermit, first trav- elling to the Nagorje region and then finding refuge on Mount Kozjak. Legend has it that he didn’t encounter another human being for more than 30 years, until he met future Byzantine emperor Romanos IV Diogenes, who was hunting in the forests of Mount Kozjak. While following a wounded deer, a Byzantine no- bleman came across the cave of the monk Prohor by chance, and the holy man prophesied that he would be- come emperor. Perhaps Diogenes would have forgotten about this chance encounter and prophecy if, after hav- ing already ascended to the imperial throne, he hadn’t been visited in a dream by Prohor, who said to him re- proachfully: “You’ve forgotten me, old man”. e emper- or then returned to Mount Kozjak and, after a lengthy search, found the mortal remains of the old man. Believ- ers claim that miracles already began to occur even then. Firstly when Emperor Diogenes decided to build a church in Staro Nagoričane. However, when they tried to relo- cate Prohor’s relics there, the bones would not shift, as if nailed to the ground. Even after death, it seemed, Monk Prohor didn’t want to abandon the Pčinja area. And thus a small church was erected using stone from the river, with the remains of the saint interred there. More than 200 years later, Holy King Milutin built a larger house of worship above that church.

Legend has it that you only have to cross the bridge once and return to the other side for something good to happen to you. More importantly, however, is the story that it was actually the fortress of Marko Kraljević, who ruled over this area.
