T he Venice Biennale will this year be held accord- ing to its regular schedule, from 2 nd to 12 th Septem- ber. Following the cancel- lation of the Cannes Festival, this re- ally sends a message of optimism, but the history of the Mostra, which has run since 1932, will still change its rhythm as a result of COVID-19. In order to ensure safety during the fes- tival, all protective measures will be in force, with an emphasis on physi- cal distancing, which is why a smaller number of visitors is expected. “I’m extremely pleased that the Festival can be held, with the minimal reduction of films and sections. With- out forgetting the many victims of the last few months, who will be hon- oured as they deserve, the first inter- national festival after the forced break caused by the pandemic becomes a significant celebration of the reopen- ing that we are all looking forward to and a tangible message of optimism for the whole film world, which has been hit so hard by this crisis,” an- nounced the festival’s director Alber- to Barbera, adding that the number of films included in the official selec- tion will be reduced, but not by much, and that 50 to 55 films from all over
the world will be screened.
e complete programme and ad- ditional details about the film festival were to be announced at a conference on 28 th July (a few days after this edi- tion of Elevate went to press), but it is already known that this year there will be no Sconfini section, which is intended for different genres of film with a minimum runtime of 60 min- utes and includes experimental, art house films and independent produc- tions. And that the main parts remain unchanged, so the competitive sec- tions of Venice 77 and Horizons will be organised in accordance with the usual procedures and format. Screenings, with the applying of all security measures, will be held on the good old Lido, which, as Barbera noted, will be attended by a signifi- cant number of directors and actors, while online press conferences will be held with participants who are unable to come to Italy due to travel restric- tions. e jury of the 77 th Mostra will be headed by Australian actress and Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, who said that it is both a pleasure and a privilege, while the biennial will al- so be marked by Italian actress An- na Foglietta, who will host the festi- val’s opening and closing ceremonies.
