LOUVRE REOPENED The Mona Lisa is back! The Louvre Museum in Paris, which houses the world’s most famous portrait, reopened last month after a four-month lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic THE REOPENING OF THE WORLD’S MOSTVIS ITED MUSEUM REPRESENTS a bright spot in what is otherwise shaping up to be a grimly quiet start to the summer tourist season in France, with far fewer visitors than was normal before the pandemic closed borders. About 70 per cent of the giant museum — 45,000 square metres of space, or the equivalent of 230 tennis courts — housing 30,000 of the Louvre’s vast collection of works is again accessible to visitors who have been starved of art during the lockdown. Prior to the pandem- ic, the Louvre was toured by as many as 50,000 people during the busiest summer months. “It’s very emotion- al for all the teams that have prepared this reopening,” said the Louvre’s President-Director Jean-Luc Martinez. e Mona Lisa, which is normally mobbed by people trying to get their own cellphone snap of Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, can now be viewed by visitors fol- lowing a one-way route and observing social distancing. Anyone wanting to visit the Louvre will be required to pre-book a time slot. Inside, face masks are compulso- ry and social distancing of at least one metre will be en- forced. It is also worth remembering that even if you’re able to visit for free (e.g. if you’re aged under 25 and a resident of the EU) you still have to reserve your slot in advance. Another tip: inside it’ll be card payments on- ly. Children under 11 do not need to wear masks, but all other visitors must have their face covered, as must staff. ere will also be other notable differences. For the time being, the cloakroom will be closed -- so it’s worth packing light – and some galleries will remain closed, in- cluding the French sculptures of the Middle Ages and Renaissance sections, as well the sections covering arts of Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas.
