ŠOLTA OSTRVO MASLINA, VINA, SMOKAVA I MEDA ISLAND OF OLIVES, WINE, FIGS AND HONEY

Guste borove šu- me, maslinjaci i kristalno čisto, azurnoplavo more najveće su čari ovog malenog ostr- va, koje s ponosom štiti svoju nevinost.

D espite being the closest island to Split, Šolta has only 800 inhabitants and is essentially the opposite of Hvar and Brač. Modern tourism is somewhat muted here, so a kind of special tranquillity reigns on this is- land. Alongside the few inhabitants, peace has also been found on the island of Šolta by rabbits and wild boars, while the Eurasian scops owl – which is just one of a hundred species that inhabit the island – has become the symbol of the islanders. Pristine nature and an authentic lifestyle are the essence of the slogan“return to innocence”, which is used to invite those who don’t crave crazy nights out and noisy festivals. On Šolta there are many surviving trees of the forgotten car- ob, whose long brown pods were once a delicacy in shermen’s homes. Dense pine woods, olive groves and crystal clear, tur- quoise seas are the greatest charms of this small island, which proudly protects its“innocence”. Although benecial to the weary bodies and souls of urban folk, walks through thick green forests, fresh air and enjoyment of sea views don’t imply that Šolta oers boredom as a form of holiday. On the contrary, its numerous bays are a paradise for divers, sail- ors and cyclists. It is on two wheels that you will most easily tour the settlements of Rogač, Grohote, Stomorska, Maslinica... All of them are located in a line that’s 19 km long – the length of this is- land. Along the way you should feel free to pick gs, because g trees are everywhere, and in the village of Grohote try the famous Šolta honey, from wild rosemary, which has been cultivated only here by one family for generations. Honey is said to have been produced here since antiquity, and the sweetness of the local honey is said to have attracted Illyrian queen Teuta, who reigned in the 3 rd century BC. Legend has it that this queen had her own castle on Šolta, where – after numerous wars with Greek colonies – she nally found peace. Like Teuta, today’s sailors also nd peace in Šolta’s numerous bays, which have been shaped by waves to create natural protection against gales and tempests. On this island of olives, wines, gs and honey, Teuta’s regal peace is available to anyone who doesn’t nd it too tough to traverse dense pine woods in search of their own slice of paradise in hidden coves.
