Smešten iza zidina tvrđave, Nišvil je širom Evrope prepoznat kao jedan od najboljih džez festivala, koji svakog avgusta privla- či kako velikane džeza, tako i poznate arenbi , soul, fank i rege muzičare sveta. Ljubitelji pop, rok i elektro zvuka pronaći će svoje omiljeno mesto na brojnim drugim gradskim festivalima kao što su Nisomnia ili Naissus Fest. A kao dodatna potvrda prestonice mera- ka stoji činjenica da je Niš rodni grad legendarnog Šabana Bajramovića, ko- ji je širom sveta poznat kao kralj rom- ske muzike. Niš je tom vrsnom pevaču odao počast podizanjem spomenika na šetalištu pored Nišave, popularnom mestu za odmaranje ili druženje sa pri- jateljima tokom večernjih sati.

U poređe- nju sa ostalim balkanskim prestonica- ma i gradovima, gastronomska ponu- da Niša je izvanredna i neverovatno povoljna. Uz brojne šarmantne srpske kafane, Kazandžijsko sokače je nezao- bilazna ulica kako za one koji uživaju u hrani, tako i za one koji obožavaju dobar provod. Ako već dobro poznaje- te omiljene balkanske posla- stice – ćevape i pljeskavice, onda nemojte da propustite da probate nadaleko pozna- ta rebarca na kajmaku ili se upustite u avanturu otkriva- nja slasnih butkica umotanih u kupus, zapečenih sa doma- ćom slaninicom. Dodajte na to i veliku porciju šopske ili morav- ske salate i zalijte sve hladnim pivom. Ako ste pravi fan bureka, trebalo bi da znate da širom Balkana posto- ji nekoliko verzija tog omiljenog pe- civa. Ali onaj burek iz okrugle tepsi- je, koji potom najčešće biva sečen na četvrtine, ubedljivo je najpopularniji. I za slučaj da to ne znate, nastao je u Nišu u 15. veku!

Once known as Naissus, southern Serbia’s largest city was the birthplace of Constantine the Great, who is famous for having issued the Edict of Milan that made Christianity the o cial religion of the Roman Empire. The archaeological site of Mediana (Constantine’s 4 th -century residence) features recently renovated mo- saics and other remains from the Roman period. Ćele Kula (Skull Tower) is a gruesome yet fascinating sight that tells the story of the struggle for the liberation of Niš in the early 19 th century: yes, it was built from re- al skulls – those of Serbian soldiers – as a warning to anyone considering attempt- ing to rebel against the Ottoman Empire. There are more ght-for-freedom sto- ries to be found in Niš. The Red Cross Con- centration Camp is one of few preserved Na- zi concentration camps, from which the rst mass escape in then occupied Europe was organised in 1942. The local spirit of liberty also lives on in the memorial park on nearby Bubanj Hill, where three gigantic concrete sts rise from the ground to symbolise the ghting and su ering of men, women and children who were victims of WWII.
