Kapija Kavkaza Rostov se tokom svoje kratke istorije od male luke pretvorio u milionski grad. Nezvanično se naziva kapijom Kavkaza i južnom prestonicom Rusije, a tamo kao nigde u zemlji postoji jaka tradicija donskih kozaka – vojne klase poznate od sredine 16. veka. U gradu se stalno održavaju različite tematske aktivnosti posvećene kozacima. Na primer, vojne igre, na kojima se donski kozaci takmiče u jahanju, rukovanju oružjem, pokazuju hrabrost... Mesto koje obavezno treba da posetite je Hram rođenja Presvete Bogorodice — minijaturna kopija Hrama Hrista Spasitelјa u Moskvi. To je treća crkva podignuta na istom mestu: prvu je spalio grom, druga je oronula. Hram je bio zatvoren tokom sovjetske ere, ali je vrlo brzo obnovljen, da bi 1999. ponovo dobio i četvorostruki zvonik uništen tokom rata. U okolini grada rođen je čuveni pisac i nobelovac Mihail Šolohov, autor remek-dela Tihi Don , a u Rostovu su boravili i Sergej Jesenjin i Aleksandar Solženjicin, koji je u tom gradu proveo studentske dane.
