M y heart is beating fast. I’m cov- ering a Formula One race for the rst time. I’ve been follow- ing the competition for years, was a fan of the legendary Schumacher and had a desire to photograph Formula One. I got the opportunity to do so ve years ago, and in Monaco of all places. I stand beside the famous Mirabeau Corner with telephoto lenses and wait to catch wide shots of drivers who, dressed in their full gear, more resemble robots than human beings. Whatever event I’ve photo- graphed, I always tried to nd within it the human side, but here... it simply wasn’t there. When you’re an agency photographer, you always need to nd a balance between recording an event and creating a photo. One that’s dierent and will be noticed. For me, the latter is always the most beauti- ful challenge during Formula 1. That’s why one of my favourite techniques is“panning”, which you can also see in these photos - the Formula One event is in focus, while the background is blurred to give an im- pression of speed. And then there’s the human element. It’s easiest when the winner celebrates, with champagne and all that goes with it, but sometimes you get lucky, like when Lewis Hamilton leapt into the crowd. Something like that is rarely seen. Adrenaline, glamour, the sound and the smell of speed... How all of that can be captured in the blink of an eye is revealed to us by France-Presse photojournalist Andrej Isaković ahead of the new Formula One season
