It was in this house, in 1912, that a secret agreement was signed between Serbia and Bulgaria on the liberating of the Southern Slavs from Turkish enslavement. It was also here that a French society devoted to helping children, called “Kap mle- ka” [Drop of Milk], was established, as well as a World War II Partisan Hospital. is house also hosted the city’s first balls, diplomatic re- ceptions, literary evenings and ar- tistic gatherings. at tradition has continued to this very day. e first discotheque in Belgrade, “Kod Laza Šećera” [At Laza Šećer’s], was opened in the basement of this house. With its rich art collection and salon ac- cessories, the House of Jevrem Gru- jić represents the life of elite Serbi- an families from the political and cultural circles of the 19 th and 20 th centuries. is monument of culture and heritage building today houses the private Museum of History, Art and Diplomacy, which connects and unites all these aspects in one place. Alongside a permanent exhibi- tion of portraits of family members that are works of the most signifi- cant Serbian painters, there are also utility items that illustrate a bygone way of life. You can also enjoy guest exhibitions, theatre plays, children’s workshop and various other interest- ing elements of the repertoire pre- pared by family members in coop- eration with national museums and cultural institutions. And you can even taste it all! As Queen Natalie’s favourite chocolate cake, made ac- cording to the original 19 th century recipe that’s preserved in the House of Jevrem Grujić, is also served here.
