FENOMENI PHENOMENA
One of the main reasons that anime has stood the test of time and gained increasing popularity world- wide is its unique ability to grow with its viewers. Many children grew up watching anime shows on TV, such as Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon and Yu- Gi-Oh! At that time, those children were unable to grasp that they were watching Japanese animation, but the popularity of the shows meant that they developed a soft spot for anime in their hearts. Anime is an animation drawing style that origi- nated in Japan, with a characteristic stylisation of characters and back- grounds that distinguishes it visually from other forms of animation. e word anime comes from the Japa- nese word animeshon, which is it- self derived from the English word animation. Some anime titles are hand-drawn, while some are com- puter-generated, which is common- place today. Anime stories are mostly fictional, usually created under the influence of manga and encompass a wide range of genres. Just like West- ern feature films, anime cartoons have their own opening sequences. Music has great significance in Ja-
pan, so anime composers are most- ly great musicians. Anime festivals Various anime festivals are held around the world. I will list here two that are held in Belgrade: chibikon and Japanizam. ese are the two largest and most significant festivals in the anime industry. Admission is available to all and they are held an- nually at Belgrade’s Dom Omladine youth centre. Anime festivals gener- ally include socialising between cos- players, competitions, games, while
many items associated with almost all anime works are sold. Attending chibikon is only boring for those who aren’t anime fans and those who at- tend the festival alone. While I’m at this festival, I like to find refreshment in Booble Tea or sushi, and I spend my money on manga comics that are quite reasonably priced. Most popular In the anime and manga indus- try, popularity is divided into so- called “all time” popular and new ani- me and manga that have just started being broadcast and are already gain- ing an incredible following! Almost all of the anime listed have their own manga comics. e manga versions are usually published first. It is im- portant to note that I have included some animated series that started a few years ago but have yet to finish under the category of newer anime and manga. (See page 72) For exam- ple, Attack on Titan is an anime that was first broadcast publicly in April 2013, but the final season is current- ly streaming, which means that fans go crazy for new episodes.
