WINE ROUTES Between rugged mountain peaks and the shimmering coast, the spe- cial interest tourist will traverse un- trampled landscapes and rolling hills covered with vineyards. The rich wi- ne producing history of Cyprus has been constantly unfolding for 6,000 years. Tours of the island’s Wine Rou- tes are popular and enable visitors to witness the winemaking process and sample some of the excellent produ- ce from the numerous regional wine- ries producing award-winning wines. Wine enthusiasts can visit restored traditional wine presses and muse- ums, which also reflect traditional ru- ral life and customs.

The island’s longstanding wi- nemaking tradition can lay claim to the world’s oldest wine that’s sti- ll in production: the Commandaria sweet dessert wine, while the ove- rabundance of grapes is also utili- sed to produce the potent ‘firewa- ter’ spirit of Zivania. All across Cyprus, you’ll have opportunities to taste the island’s distinctive cuisine, which is com- posed of meze - small plates of everything from flame-grilled, deli- cately spiced meats, to fresh vege- tables and amazing cheeses, such as the famous halloumi (the savo- ury sheep’s cheese that can be gri- lled).
