/ , N ature has its own genesis and its own stages. They have of- ten owed independently of the development of man, but Centre of Serbia open issues of associations and questions. Perhaps the rock we’re standing on isn’t
just a rock, but rather a remnant of some geological eruption (exhibition on volca- noes). Perhaps an animal we raise in the gar- den is the descendant of a terrible monster which, over centuries of evolution, adapted and changed its nature or perhaps it didn’t adapt and has since disappeared (exhibi- tion on dinosaurs). Perhaps the grasses and trees that nat- urally inhabit the planet represent a kind of steady, calm healthy form of life that man can never achieve, although he could learn everything about this from the wisdom of the plants and animals that live in the wild, far from man, in their own harmony (exhi- bitions on biodiversity in Serbia and Africa). Perhaps skeletons are all that will re- main of us, if we don’t adapt our life to some higher purpose and meaning, through self-realisation. And all of this must be shown to our children, so that they can learn from an early age what awaits them in life, all around them, to learn to view the world dif- ferently, through an awakened eye, as Rus- sian poet Khlebnikov would say. The Nat- ural History Centre of Serbia in Svilajnac is striving to become that awakened eye.
have been very much connected with man, often also forming him decisively. Man had to ght – with nature, with others and with himself.“There is no subject more captivat- ing, more worthy of study, than nature,”said the great Nikola Tesla. And by studying nature, man studies and educates himself. He can learn from nature to become better than he was, and to change the world around him for the better. If for no other reason than because careful observation will reveal to him that, in this apparent chaos and cruelty, exists a certain order and sequence. If he familiar- ises himself with the perfection of that or- der, it will perhaps calm the chaos he has within himself. The Natural History Centre of Serbia in Svilajnac endeavours to show precisely that genesis and development of nature from its original forms to its present appear- ance and condition. And that condition, of- ten due to modern man, isn’t the best, be- cause man corrupts the beauty of nature instead of nurturing it. That’s why the ex- hibitions organised at the Natural History
