Until 27 th January, you’ll have an opportunity to visit the Toulouse- Lautrec exhibition at the Grand Palais and dive into the culture of Monmartre
We know the look of the Moulin Rouge from its early years thanks to the paintings of Toulouse-Lautrec. A regular guest, with a regular glass of absinthe, this painter also creat- ed posters for his favourite nightclub. If your travels lead you to Paris, before 27 th January next year, you’ll have an oppor- tunity to visit the Toulouse-Lautrec exhibition at the Grand Palais and dive into the culture of Monmartre. Lautrec also presented two special dancers in his paintings and posters: Louise Weber, aka La Goulue, the star of the Moulin Rouge, and Jane Avril, with whom he was in love. La Goulue was also dubbed the Queen of Monmartre. Guests nicknamed her The Glutton out of a ection, as she of- ten drank from their champagne glasses while dancing the can-can. She would also swing her leg so high while danc- ing the can-can that she could remove the top hats from the heads of adoring fans. And what did we see at

Brojne gru- pne plesne tačke, nekoliko solo ple- snih tačaka sa glumom i pevanjem. Defile šetlandskih ponija. Akrobat- ske tačke solista od kojih doslovno zastaje dah. Ekspresivniji posmatra- či, poput mene, ispuštali su uzda- he i povike. U jednom trenutku sa neosvetljene pozornice izdigao se osvetljeni prozirni stakleni bazen, u kojem je plivalo nekoliko ogro- mnih udava. Sedela sam svega ne- koliko metara od bazena i stomak mi se stegao. Tolike zmije nikada nisam videla. Niti sam znala da su plivači. Tačka je zahtevala da mla- da lepotica uskoči u bazen i bori se sa zmijama, kao robinja poslata u smrt. Posle graciozne borbe u ko- joj nije bilo povređenih, plesačica je trijumfalno podigla jednu zmiju osmehujući se široko i radosno kao da drži belog zečića. Veliko finale je kankan, u kojem učestvuje ceo ansambl. Veselo pod- vriskivanje plesačica, kostimi u bo- jama francuske zastave, kilote sa kar- nerima, tapšanje publike u ritmu. I poniji su ponovo izašli na scenu da se poklone. Na moju sreću, zmije ne. Tek kada se zavesa spustila, ose- tila sam koliko sam tokom prethod- nih 90 minuta zaista bila u drugoj dimenziji, potpuno unutar fantazije. Beg za preporuku.
Mulen ruž iz početnih godina po- znajemo sa slika Tuluza Lotreka. Re- dovan gost, sa redovnom čašom ap- sinta, slikar je pravio i plakate za svoj omiljeni noćni klub. Ako vas put vodi u Pariz, do 27. januara iduće godine imate priliku da u Gran paleu pose- tite izložbu Tuluza Lotreka i uronite u kulturu Monmartra. Na slikama i plakatima Lotrek je predstavio i dve posebne plesačice: Luiz Veber, pozna- tiju kao Proždrljiva (La Goulue), zvez- du Mulen ruža, i Žan Avril, u koju je bio zaljubljen. La Goulue su zvali i Kraljicom Monmartra. Nadimak Proždrljiva gosti su joj dali od milošte, zato što je često igrajući kankan ispijala nji- hove čaše šampanjca. the Moulin Rouge? A gen- uine spectacle. Numerous group dance moves, sev- eral solo dance elements with acting and singing. A parade of Shetland po- nies. Acrobatic elements of soloists that are literally breathtaking. More expres- sive spectators, like myself, emitting sighs and yells. At one instant, rising to the un- lit stage was an illuminat- ed transparent glass pool in which several huge con- strictor snakes swam. I was sitting just a few metres away from the pool and my stomach tightened. I’d nev- er seen so many snakes be- fore, nor was I even aware
that they could swim. This element required a young beauty to jump into the pool and ght with the snakes, like a slave sent to her death. After a graceful ght during which no injuries were sustained, the dancer lifted one snake triumphantly in the air, smiling broadly and joyfully as if holding a white rabbit. The grand nale is a can-can kick line featuring the en- tire ensemble. Cheerfully whooping dancers, costumes in the colours of the French ag, frilly knickers, the audience clap- ping in rhythm with the beat. And the ponies even returned to the stage to take a bow. Fortunately for me, the snakes didn’t return. It was only when the curtain came down that I felt how much I’d really been in another dimension for the past 90 min- utes, completely engrossed in the fantasy. An escape worth recommending.
