R epresenting one of the world’s last 5-star hotels to remain in the hands of the founding family, you won’t nd better service, food or atmosphere anywhere in Switzerland. No- vember is also the perfect time to go there, as it’s not too overcrowded and it’s then that the rst snow starts falling. Following a walk around little lake, order a hot choc- olate and enjoy huge reside armchairs. Sils-Maria is in the canton of Graubünden, aka Grisons, Switzerland’s easternmostandbiggestcanton.Thespecif- ic language that’s spoken there, Romansh – a mixture of German and Italian – is also spoken in the Cortina d’Ampezzo region of northern Italy, where it’s referred to as Lad- ino. The canton’s other connection with It- aly is that it is by far Switzerland’s most civ- ilised place in terms of culture, food and architecture, and Sils-Maria is a prime ex- ample of that re nement. All houses in the village are made of stone and decorated with exterior frescoes, some of which date back many centuries. The Hotel Waldhaus is perched above the village like Cinderel- la’s castle, complete with turrets and big white walls. The interior transports us back to the 1920s, albeit in contemporary mint condition, of course: plush chairs, wooden walls, wild ower bouquets on small tables, spent years writing, is the 100-year-old Hotel Waldhaus. In the little Swiss village of Sils-Maria, near St Moritz, where Friedrich Nietzsche
a large replace and the kind of service and feel that’s reminiscent of the imagi- nary Orient-Express, but is real. There isn’t a single advertisement for exclusive watch- es or clothes, there’s no “hotel shop” and no ambient music – just genuine, simple etiquette and elegance.
