One could believe when first meeting with Carolina Kavan, a tall athletic stu- dent from St-Lawrence College that she’s just like any other student. Loose ponytail, sweatshirt and jeans, and a backpack, the business major student is actually from Caracas, Venezuela. A couple of weeks ago, on April 4, she was awarded best academics results for an athlete, with a 4.0 GPA, and making it to the semi-finals as a member of the Sharks, the girls college indoor soccer team. “It was a total suprise,” said Carolina. The banquet was almost over and as her coach, Graham Midley, was asking about her grade point average (GPA), she replied as if talking about the weather: “4.0 I think”. That conversation occurred just after all mentions had been distributed to students in sports, such as most valuable player (MVP), most improved athlete, and many others. Coach Midley was actually thinking about which student would get the “best academic result for an athlete award”, knowing it was the last one to be given. “Oh you’re getting it for sure,” he told Car- olina. “I thought no way,” she said in all modesty, even a little shy. “Three of my teammates got awards,” re- called Carolina. There are six teams at St- Lawrence College, hockey, golf, soccer among them. When the 28 year old student was called up, she didn’t believe it. “I was a little bit shocked!,” she recalled. From Venezuela, Carolina could have chosen a school in any country in the world. Why choose Cornwall, Ontario, of all cities? “I like the Canadian society. I was in Toronto in 2005 for six weeks as an English major and I Cornwall is close to Montreal, and close to Ottawa,” explained the athlete. “I was looking for a college online and this one (SLC) had a good perception from students. It’s a small campus, you can talk to the Dean, to the teachers,” said Carolina. As expected, when she shared the news posting a message on the Facebook wall, the comments kept coming in from every- where, congratulating Carolina. Even her family back at home were as happily sur- prised as she was. It is a bit of a cliché nowadays to say that it takes hard work and discipline to bal-

ance school assignments, training for the soccer team, and downtime for Carolina. “You need to be very organized. I know I have classes until 3:30. So soccer training is on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4:30 to 6:00,” she said. For competi- tion with the Sharks, the team played on Sundays pulling for Cornwall, at the Ben- son Center. Carolina chose the business major be- cause she’s good with numbers. It’s just that simple in her mind. “I’m very good with numbers, finance as well”. She found out the staff were looking for tutors and she applied. Tutoring classes can be given in between classes, and it takes about an Now that the semester is coming to an end. What lies ahead She’d like to start a family in the future, do some volunteer work, and also, not suprinslngly, keep travelling. “I love to travel at least twice a year”, she said with a discreet smile.
