BRANDENBURŠKA KAPIJA BRANDENBURG GATE SIMBOL MIRA I ZAJEDNIŠTVA SYMBOL OF UNITY AND PEACE
S imbol moći nekadašnje Pruske, a danas simbol zajedništva i mira, jedina je preostala od kapi- ja Berlina. Ukrašena je figurom kvadrige, četvo- roprega koji vozi boginja mira, i urađena je u ne- oklasičnom stilu. Kvadrigu je 1806. ukrala Napoleonova vojska, ali danas je opet na svom mestu. Dok obilazite kapiju, uprkos tome što će vam prila- ziti prodavci pereca i (lažnih) ostataka Berlinskog zida, teško ćete odoleti osećaju da se nalazite na mestu toli- kog broja istorijskih događaja: proslave povodom rušenja Berlinskog zida novembra 1989, susreta Helmuta Kola i istočnonemačkog premijera Hansa Modrova, nacističke proslave Hitlerove pobede i Reganovog poziva Gorba- čovu da „otvori (ova) vrata i sruši (ovaj) zid“... Nedavno su se oko Kapije okupljali i demonstranti koji podržava- ju prijem izbeglica u Nemačku, a pre dve godine, posle napada na gej klub u Orlandu, kapija je osvetljena du- ginim bojama i oko nje se okupilo više od 130.000 ljudi.
T his symbol of the former power of Prussia, which today symbolises unity and peace, is the only city gate left in Berlin. At the top it is decorated with a“quadriga”, a four- horse chariot figure, carrying Victoria, the goddess of victory. It was built in the neoclassical style. The Quadriga was stolen by Napoleon’s army is 1806, but today is back where it belongs. As you tour the gate, apart from being approached by those selling pretzels and (fake) pieces of the Berlin Wall, you will find it hard to resist the feeling that you are in a place that has hosted so many historic moments: the celebrating of the fall of the wall in November 1989, the meeting of Helmut Kohl and East German Prime Minister Hans Modrow, the Nazis celebrating Hit- ler’s victory and Reagan calling on Gorbachev to“open (this) gate and tear down (this) wall”... In more recent times, it has been oc- cupied by protesters who support the accepting of refugees in Germany, while two years ago, after the mass shooting at a gay club in Orlando, Florida, the gate was lit up in rainbow colours and more than 130,000 people gathered there.
