V an Gogh has given its audience a new, tenth stu- dio album,“Sea Without a Shore”, while a book with the same title will be released on 8th March, containing the lyrics of songs and photographs by Zvonimir Đukić Đule, published by Laguna. Đule is cel- ebrating 33 years as a rocker with new chords, by exper- imenting with sounds and rhythms, but also emotions. “And now that the album is over, after a full ve years, I still feel like I’m creating and shaping it, but at a dierent, imaginary level. I don’t claim that this is the best album in our career, but I do claim that it is special in terms of charm and is strong in terms of its emotional and energetic code.” You’ve reached a sea without a shore. How was the journey? - So far it’s been very exciting and inspirational. And the real journey of the tour after the release of the album is yet to come. You live for some songs, you live from some songs, while some songs bring you to life. I was called for a long time by the same dream: beautiful endless expans- es, bathed in colourful silence. My sea without a shore symbolises life without barriers and a picture of freedom coloured by optimism. And the strength of the number 33, marking the years that the band has existed, awakens the recognising of the end of an old creative force and the beginning of a new one. Do you like water? Did that love provide the inspi- ration for the title of the new album? - I love the sea. Water and I often talk loudly in the show- er. According to Jacques Cousteau: the cure for everything is salt water, sweat, tears or sea water. You seem to have always had a good time with your work, which isn’t always easy? - Reveal to me a job that can be easy, provided that you approach it with maximum dedication and respon- sibility? The moment I feel my guitar pick causing blisters in my pocket and that my guitar has become a burden on my shoulder, there I am in a new, fun playroom. In music, and in everyday life, there are people who are optimis- tic, they speak in a major scale. And then there are those others, pessimists, who speak in a minor scale. I’m among those who rejoice in every harmony of life that calls for joy. What do you currently like on the domestic mu- sic scene? - There is an army of talented and versatile people to- wards whom the media is, unfortunately, not suciently inclined. I like Irie FM and Wikluh Sky. I also have endless respect for YU Grupa, our “musical parents”. Whose concert would you happily attend as a mem- ber of the audience? - I’ve listened to a lot of concerts while travelling around the world. I’m sorry that I didn’t get the opportunity to hear Freddie Mercury preforming live with Queen. Have you ever wanted to abandon the scene be- cause you had enough of music? - I’m not a man who gives up.There is no‘enough’, there is no substitute for that which has no substitute, and that is freedom of expression and the distance of a view without binoculars. There’s only forwards, further, faster and better. What do you have in abundance today, and what are you lacking? - I have a lot of imagination, and that is capable of lead- ing to sweet madness for which there is no insulin. I love when my imagination forms all kinds of things, and when I leave behind me dishevelled moves in reality, without

any need whatsoever to polish them. How do you succeed in staying out of the focus of the tabloids? - I’m not interested in the tabloids, they have their own trained herd. I stay away from meaningless content and ctional life. To me, this simple life of mine, surround- ed by people dear to me, is interesting enough. I ee from the pack, this ideology is my support Is this also connected to your decision not to ex- pose your love life? - My wife, Julija, and I have been a team since way back during our school days. I don’t see what we should share with an unknown world, and all with the intention of pre- senting ourselves as a perfect couple. Ludicrous. What did your son Simon get from you, and what did he get from his mother? - He found himself from any early age while diving in the depths, while he is now inspired by heights, wings, ker- osene and planes. From him I learnt how to approach com- munication without feeling burdened and how to avoid my ambitions inuencing him, even when born out of the best intentions. And guitars are also like children? - I often dream while awake in the enchanted triangle between my babies “Telecaster”, “Stratocaster” and “Gib- son Les Paul”. The Telecaster has now become a moult- ed, industrious old man with a good voice, and I played it on almost all of our albums and tours. In the stu- dio I often use my Gibson Les Paul - Top Gold, and from my father I received my rst ever serious gui-

tar, a Fender Stratocaster, way back in 1979. It was a gift for successfully completing my rst year of studies at the Faculty of Law, with his desire for me to continue studying as suc- cessfully. And it was actually this gift that introduced me to the world of rock ‘n’ roll, and took me away from that col- lege forever.
