them, but maybe you don’t. ABOVE ALL THE REST
Možda ste znali, a možda i niste!
Most people don’t consider Madrid when thinking of cities that are perched among the clouds, but they should! Madrid is situ- ated at the highest elevation of any capital in Europe, at 667 me- tres, or 2,188 feet above sea-level! DEVIL IN THE PARK Madrid’s El Retiro Park has the only statue dedicated to the fallen angel Lucifer. The statue is located at the park’s Fuente del Ángel Caído fountain and has gargoyles that spit water at its base. BEARING FRUIT Madrid’s ocial symbol is ‘El Oso y El Madroño’, which translates as ‘The Bear and The Strawberry Tree’ and depicts a bear raised on its hind legs eating from the tree. A statue of this symbol is located in the Puerta de Sol square, weighing over 20 tonnes, while the sym- bol is on the crest of football club Atlético de Madrid. Many centu- ries ago, bears would roam the outskirts of Madrid and sometimes enter the city limits. DE MADRID AL CIELO Aside from enjoying some of the most dramatic and gorgeous sunsets we’ve ever seen, Madrid enjoys more cloudless days than any other city in Europe, around 250 per year on average. COOL CATS Madrid natives are sometimes referred to as ‘Gatos’, which means cats, and many attribute this to the idea that everyone sleeps in late, just like cats. However, this nickname is historically linked to an ancient Spanish soldier who climbed the city’s outer walls with such agility that he reminded those watching of a cat.
