Last year’s satire/criticism trend is in the shadow of a new trend that is in- gratiating the audience and an idea that was proposed at the beginning of Au- gust last year. Specically, this year is marked by risky, modern decisions that are simultaneously a compromise solution - to satisfy the audience, critics and lm connoisseurs. One of this year’s top favourites is Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón’s ‘Roma’. A monochrome black & white lm about the life of a family during the 1970 civ- il war in Mexico in 1970, narrated from the perspective of a servant who was a cleaner, cook, maid, nanny, father, mother and, if necessary, also a punchbag. The emotional gravitas of the lm and composition of the framing, which left lm connoisseurs breathless, is ready to take the golden statuette. It is joined in the race by Peter Farrelly’s ‘Green Book’, based on true events in the life of famous African-American pianist Don Shirley. There’s also the com- edy-drama ‘The Favourite’ by Yorgos Lanthimos, about the last ruler of the Stu- art family, Queen Anne, in the early 18 th century, and her mistresses who bright- ened and marked her reign. Spike Lee’s ‘BlackKklansman’ plays on the cards of the Koen Brothers with this satirical presentation of Ku Klux Klan and its mem- bers, while Adam McKay’s‘Vice’brings the story of former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, who is notorious in American history due to his political views. Also in- cluded in the race is ‘A Star is Born’, the directorial debut of actor Bradley Coop- er and a remake of the 1937 classic of the same name, which tells the music in- dustry story of the rise and cruel fall of a Country music star. And then, of course, there’s Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’, about the ctional country of Wakanda – a land at the heart of Africa that has a level of technological development that’s centu- ries ahead of the ordinary world. This last year has denitely been in the sign of man through history. Themat- ically, the lms aspiring for awards focused the most on historical gures whose names aren’t overly well-known, such as Queen Anne for example, but also on the popular biographies of people who left their mark before uttering their nal farewell to the audience – like Freddie Mercury in ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. However, the inuence of the lm ‘Black Panther’ and the fth consecutive remake of ‘A Star is Born’ will ensures this year’s Oscars dier from the previous editions. Whatever will be will be on 24 th February, when the Academy will of- cially present the verdict. Will there be surprises? I don’t believe so, because regardless of how much the media pushes ‘Black Panther’ and ‘A Star is Born’ as the favourites of the audience, the awards will most likely end up in the hands of Cuarón or Lanthimos.
