ZURICH Zurich is Switzerland’s largest city, the coun- try’s main transport hub and the top start- ing point for travellers. The city lies at the north-western end of Lake Zurich, beside the River Limmat. Behind its carved facades, this wealthy banking capital o ers a rich palette of cultural treasures. An excellent place to start walking tours is represented by the stone streets of the Old Town, with their amazing shops, cafés and galleries. The kilometre-long Bahnhofstrasse is one of Europe’s top shop- ping streets and it simply entices with its de- signer names, famous watches and jewellery. In the city you will nd more than 50 muse- ums and 100 art galleries. The top choice is Kun- sthaus Zurich, a museum of ne arts that boasts an impressive collection of artworks dating from the Middle Ages to the present day. The second favourite museum is Rietberg, which focuses on non-European art and possesses many works from China, India and Africa. Not far from Zu- rich’s main railway station is the National Muse- um, housed in a Gothic castle that reveals a rich cultural history. Families will love the zoo, with its elephant park, penguin parade and Madagas- car pavilion.
