that they make along that way of theirs, but they are made of flesh and blood, and I think that’s why the viewers like them”. One of the main heroes of the series is also Belgrade, because the story revolves around people who live in this city, who left this city, around those who came to Belgrade and those who return to it. “One of our heroes has returned to Belgrade. We wanted to show that impres- sion when someone comes back after not having been here for a long time, how the city seems to him, what he sees and what attracts his attention. What has changed, does anything here ever change, and what is the spirit of the city like. When I returned, it took me time to get used to Belgrade’s frequency. You have to fight for everything here. When it’s your turn, you have to fight for someone to hear you. When you stop at a traffic light, it’s already tense if you don’t go on amber. The fighting starts as soon as you leave your house. That’s en- ergy’s the only way for people to func- tion and we accept it, partly because of genetics,”says Goran, explaining his own experience of Belgrade. “It was important for us to show our own Belgrade, as we see it. Although it is a metropolis of around two million peo- ple, it can still offer some kind of security. That balance exists between the size of the city and the worth that you can find there. This series is neither a postcard of Belgrade nor an attempt to capture the city from its most attractive angle. These are the streets we lived on, some friends of ours, places where we spent time, with- out a desire for them to be the prettiest or the ugliest. Only the most appropri- ate for our story. Belgrade for me is the chronic history of my relocations and the various teams in which I spent time”, says Vladimir, in his Belgrade poetics. He points out that, as someone not born in Belgrade, he was first acquaint- ed with the city through film and televi- sion, and that the spirit of the capital was best encapsulated in Goran Marković’s film National Class and Srđan Karanović’s se- ries The Unpicked Strawberries. Turning to the title of the series [lit. The Morning will change everything], we ask the au- thors what the ideal Belgrade mornings are like in their opinion? “They used to be mornings after a night out, and now they’re mornings after a night filming. That brief moment, when there’s enough light to see Belgrade and it’s early enough for there to be no people to bother it,” says Goran, before Vladimir adds “we of- ten set out to shoot at about half five in the morning. Then Belgrade is deserted, quiet and peaceful. For me it’s beautiful then.

T he characters of the series To- morrow Is a New Day , Belgraders in the 30s, move through one- way and two-way streets of their lives. These are not ‘photoshopped’ peo- ple, it’s not Belgrade from a postcard. They are all real, unembellished, and yet still irresistible. Filip, a programmer and returnee from America. Anđela, his sister, an assistant pro- fessor at the Department of Psychology. Saša, her friend and a nightclub owner. Ljuba, their friend and a gym instructor. Belgrade. These are the heroes of the se- ries Tomorrow Is a New Day . Despite be- ing in their mature years, they don’t have permanent employment, their own apart- ments, families and lives sorted, but in every episode – from morning to night – they struggle to grab their own piece of concrete and enrich it. The authors and directors of the series, Vladimir Tagić and Goran Stanović, say that the characters were made so that we would be able to identify with them and recognise their lives in our own. “The heroes don’t want to endure some matrix for the benefit of others and start to rebel, firstly within them- selves. While working on the script we urged each other to talk about some in- timate things that we wouldn’t otherwise be free to share. Some more sensitive top- ics emerged, things from the darkness and the unconscious. People latch onto that because it’s true. That’s why the heroes seem alive,” says Goran Stanković, while Vladimir Tagić adds that the secret of the series lies in the fact that there’s no pre- tentious intention to be smarter. “We portray our heroes with all their faults, without a moral stance or condem- nation. They are full of errors and mistakes
