T hey’ve performed all around world, became the favourite band of the Hollywood elite, whose private parties they’ve performed at thanks to Johnny Depp, while their music has been in the back- ground of many films. Despite all this, it seems that the band members didn’t get carried away – they’ve retained their way of life and still live in their modest village of Clejani in Vlașca County, Ro- mania. Gheorghe Caliu Anghel, Taraf’s legendary violinist, says that he always feels at home in Serbia... - We’ve been to Serbia with Haïdouks several times and it seems like the people are the same as with us. I recall many concerts and dinners with guys that admired our music and invited us to stay with them. An in- credible audience! I’m very happy to return with our new project, Taraf de Caliu. Haïdouks are back on the road. Serbia also has a great tradition of Gypsy music. Have you had a chance to listen any of its artists? - Šaban Bajramović was like a real father of gypsy music; his music trav- elled and arrived with us, gypsies from all over the world. I am proud that our culture has such inspiring and sensitive musicians, even though they are hum- ble, in their way. Šaban died poor and music was his only treasure. And for me, he was the richest man in the world. Have you seen Emir Kusturica’s films? He did a lot to bring your culture to the world. Do you like his work? - I saw Black Cat, White Cat and I loved it. Why? Because in the mov- ie were my gypsy folk and everything was real, like real life. It’s a movie about life, exactly how it is, and I think that’s why the film made it to the red carpet. He also worked with Johnny Depp, who is impresed with your music. Is it true that you go to perform at great Hollywood parties? Is there a clash of cultures and values? - Johnny Depp introduced me to everybody, so I felt like a guest of hon- our. He was like my brother. It was fun- ny, we spoke to each other in French and Romani. Everywhere it was a fu- sion of cultures and everybody – re- gardless of nationality, money, values, studies – appreciated our music. We, just some gypsy musicians from Roma- nia, felt like stars! What is it in your music that mes- merised the world? What is that music about? - Our music is a divine gift. I can feel

Džoni Dep mi je kao brat. On nas je upoznao sa svima, pa smo se uvek osecali kao počasni gosti Johnny Depp was like my brother. He introduced us to everybody, so we felt like guests of honour

pevaju i sviraju različite instrumente.
