Hilandar iza objektiva / Hilandar behind the lens
Monah poziva prisutne na večernju službu u crkvi A monk calls those present to evening services in the church
astery grounds, I met a then novice who soon after became the monk Milutin Hilandarac. My acquaintance with him grew into a true friendship. For many years, Milutin the monk, according to his monastic calling, a baker. And not just any old baker. He was a baker who everyone spoke about, both on the Holy Mountain and beyond. The bread on the monastery table, worked by his hands, could only be eaten in Hilandar and no- where else. The love with which he made the bread, along with constant prayers and according to his own recipe, was expressed through unbelievably high quality and longevity. Fascination with what he’d seen and the instant birth of an idea to transfer what he’d experience resulted in the photo-monograph “Hilandar for the ages of centuries”, which, at the bless- ing of then prior Arhimandrita Mojsija, saw the light of day in 2004. - Unfortunately, shortly after the publishing of my photo-monograph, on the night between 3rd and 4th March
2004, a catastrophic fire broke out, the third in the history of the monastery (fol- lowing those of 1722 and 1776). As the only civilian, probably thanks to the pho- tos published in the then newly pub- lished book, I received a blessing to come to the monastery and record the trage- dy. I spent two consecutive days photo- graphing what was left of the monastery. - Even today I can still feel the smell of the fire in my nostrils and hear the cracking of the structure that burned on the rubble of the northern part of the monastery complex. Following numerous exhibitions of his photographs from Hilandar, our in- terlocutor says that he likes to say that he lives for photography. - I would like to bring the sto- ry I started to an end, without ceas- ing to continue photographing the world around me, sincerely revelling in every new beautiful shot and mo- ment. I would also like to embody one of my own God-given talents in the form of a few books.
PERMISSION ACCORDING TO MONASTERY’S INTERNAL RULES How did you gain the title of Hilandar photographer; how did you earn that blessing and privilege? - Permission to shoot photography, in accordance with the monastery’s internal rules, must be sought in the form of a blessing. I receive that from the prior or his deputy if the prior is not at the monastery. This decision is made for precaution- ary purposes and to protect the privacy of the monks who live in the monastery. The use of video camera is not permitted in- side the monastery complex, particularly in the church.
