Messiah, and when Andrew told him that the Messiah had come, Peter went to find Him. When Jesus saw Peter, He knew him at once. Jesus Said something like this: “You are going to be called Cephas, which means ‘a stone.’ ” And that is what Peter was called years afterwards, when he had become strong for the Lord Jesus—as strong as a rock. But Peter didn’t know at that time that he was going to be a follower of Christ and one of the foundation stones of His church. Peter was a fisherman. It wasn’t until one day when he and his brother were fishing by the sea and Jesus stopped and said to them, “Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men," that Peter dropped his net and followed Jesus. What did Jesus mean when He said that He would make Peter a “fisher of men” ? Can we be “fishers of men,” too?

Likewise today, men are willing to accord to Jesus a high place among famous religious teachers, perhaps the very highest place, but few are ready to accord Him His proper place as being God manifest in the flesh. Then our Lord inquired about the dis ciples’ own opinion concerning Him: “Whom say ye that I am?” (vs. 20, .21). Voicing his own opinion as well as that of his companions, Peter declared: “Thou art the Christ” ; and, according to Matthew, he added, “the Son of the living God.” This is the confession upon which the church has her foundation and upon which the Lord is building that church (Matt. 16:18). By His disciples then and ever since, Jesus is recognized as “the Christ, the Son of the living God.” The Lord then cautioned the disciples not to tell this incident abroad (vs. 21, 22). His testimony had been given to the nation both by word and action, and all the neces sary proof of Messiahship had been of fered. But throughout the nation as a whole, His words had been discounted, His deeds ascribed to human power, and Dept. (KB-12) Cincinnati, O.

Object Lesson T h e S alt of th e E arth
Objects: A quart jar two-thirds full of water, an egg, a small quantity of black ink, one-half cup of red gasoline (furni ture polish may be used), and one-half cup of table salt. Lesson: This jar of water is like the world before sin entered. Adam and Eve were innocent until they ate of the forbid den fruit and became sinful beings. Every one is born with a sinful nature because he is a descendant of Adam. We will put a few drops of this ink in the water, show ing how sin made the world unclean. We will let this egg represent the person in the sinful world. Drop it into the water, and it sinks to the bottom. Unless the power of God keeps boys and girls, they will sink in sin. This red fluid which I am pouring into the: jar represents the blood of Christ which cleanses from all sin. “Without shed ding of blood is no remission,” we read in God’s Word. It has been God’s plan in all ages to cleanse from sin by blood. Be fore Jesus came and died, the blood of a lamb or of some other animal was used. Cain’s offering was refused because he did not bring a lamb whose blood could be shed for his sin. The egg which stands for an unsaved person is at the bottom of the jar. How can we get it to the top where the red is? I have here in my hand a cup of salt. Jesus said to His disciples: “Ye are the salt of the earth.” Notice what happens when I put the salt, which represents Christians, into the glass. (Stir with a spoon.) The salt causes the egg to rise up to the red. God wants you and me to bring others to Christ. This is what Philip did for Nathanael. Philip invited Nathanael to come to Christ, saying: “Come and see.” Andrew brought Peter to Christ. It was Philip, the evangelist, who brought the Ethiopian to Christ. All Christians should be the salt of the earth, bringing the un saved to Christ.

Lesson Text: Lk. 9:18-26; 1 Pet. 2:5, 6. Golden Text: “And Simon Peter an swered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matt. 16:16). Outline and Exposition t T h e L ord ’ s P erson (L k . 9:18-22). T h e occasion for Peter’s great confes sion came when our Lord asked His disciples concerning the opinion of the multitude: “Whom say the people that I am?” Mingling with the crowds, the disciples would have information which perhaps would not be publicly dis cussed when the Lord Himself was pres ent. All the people thought Jesus was a notable Personage; some declared He was John the Baptist, who had come back to call them to repentance; some thought He was Elijah, returned to earth according to ihe promise; and some thought He was one of the other prophets, sent again from God. The majority of the people thought He was a mighty man of God, but not many were willing to acknowledge Him to be what He claimed to be, that is, very
