the least bit of light from it. There is a way in which you can see the light without moving the candle, the cardboard, or your- sejves. We will use this strange-looking mirror. All you see of the mirror is a heart and feet. The heart is clear and reflects the light, but the feet are dirty and cannot reflect the light. This mirror reminds me of Peter when Christ wanted to wash his feet. He did not understand what Christ meant. When Peter refused, Christ said: “If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.” Then Peter was willing, and said: “Not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.” Jesus said: “He that is washed [R.V., “bathed”] needeth not save to wash his feet.” Peter did not need to be converted again, but only to be cleansed from the de filement of the day. In Palestine, a servant washed the feet of guests as soon as they arrived, just as we offer to take our guest’s hat and coat. The people wore sandals without stockings, and their feet became dusty as they walked along the roadway. Coming in close and frequent contact with the earth, their feet needed to be washed often. Among other things, Christ was teaching Peter that he would need frequent cleansings as he came in contact with the world. Christ had in mind the times when Peter’s thoughts would be unclean because of unclean words I n t h e first place, Peter refused to be lieve the Scripture (Vs. 27-29). Jesus quoted from Zechariah 13:7. In spite of the fact that the Word seemed to belie what Peter thought of himself, he should have believed it. It was certain that the disciples would be offended, but had Peter believed the Word, he might have saved himself his terrible denial, with its oaths and curses. It is not true that the dis ciples were forced to be offended because the Scriptures said they would be. The Scriptures merely foretold what would occur. Although God has recorded what will take place, no one is excused from obeying the Word. Peter might have been saved much anguish had he listened when Jesus promised that He would rise from the dead and go before the disciples into Galilee. So intent were the disciples upon maintaining their own integrity, that they were utterly inattentive to the word Jesus spoke. God knew what was to occur, and had made provision for it. But Peter took the position that while the others might do what was written, he himself would not. He not only looked with suspicion upon his companions, but he cast doubt upon the truth of the Scripture by denying that it told what he would dp. In the second place, Peter refused to be lieve Jesus (vs. 30, 31), for he denied that he would fulfill the prophecy quoted by Jesus. The Lord then plainly said that before the morning came Peter would deny Him thrice, whereupon Peter vehemently declared the assertion was not true, and implied that the Lord was mistaken. he had heard. He was also thinking of Peter’s tongue and the times it would speak unkind or unclean things. Not only did Christ want Peter to. be clean in order that Peter might have fel lowship with Him, but He knew also that unless the uncleanness of the world were washed away, Peter would not be able to reflect the Light to a dark world. If boys or girls are unfair in their work or play, they cannot reflect Christ, the Light of the world, to others. I will take this damp cloth and wash these feet, and I want you to notice how clearly they then reflect the light. We should ask Christ to cleanse us each day from the defilement of the world, in order that we may have fellowship with Him and reflect the Light to those who are in darkness. certainly should have known from his long association with Jesus that there could never be a mistake in the words of the One who spake as never man spake. But Peter thought too much of his own loyalty to admit that he would prove faithless to his Lord and act like a craven. Hence, he committed the sin of questioning the verac ity of the Lord Jesus Christ We, too, face the same danger when we disbelieve what is written in the Scriptures. In the third place, Peter was ignorant of himself. The Holy Spirit might well have been referring to this incident when He wrote through Paul: “Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape” (1 Cor. 10 :l2, 13). Peter was so sure of himself that he would not admit that a temptation could come to him for which he needed God’s way of escape. His pride led him to imagine that he was incap able of a terrible denial of his Lord. But, like many another saint, he knew not what terrific power is possessed by the flesh, or what pressure Satan exerts, or what utter weakness the Christian has in himself. Peter needed this experience through which he passed, in order to reveal to him his own weakness. Satan would use the BLACKBOARD LE SSO N
