How gladly to the cross I yield The baser things, The sin, the weakness, And the oft infirmity I Yet how I shrink to yield To that same cross The goodnesses I claim, The virtues seeming fa ir! What I Can it be my righteousness Must to the cross be given? Must I admit my goodness Valueless? Yea, worse than little worth— For it is written ’Tis filthy rags before His holiness. So to the cross must all My self be yielded, Ere His indwelling Spirit Really rules; And yielded thus the outward life Shall witness The resurrection beauty Of my Lord. —S.I.L. JANUARY 14 Our Birthright “Filled with the knowledge of his will" (Col. 1:9). The man who yields his life to be led and ruled by the Holy Spirit will be taught by Him. Mark the word “filled.” It points to an emptying out and putting aside of all else. It suggests a heart given up wholly and entirely to the will of God. It prom ises a life in which the will of God shall spontaneously enter the minutest details of daily life. . . . Let us pray for God’s church and for ourselves, that the spiritual filling with the knowledge of God’s will may be given us. The blessing is waiting for us; the Father delights to give it. It is our birthright. . . . Let us pray un ceasingly, honestly, believingly, to be filled with the knowledge of God’s will, in all spiritual wisdom and understanding. — A n d r ew M u rra y . JANUARY IS Reconciled “Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.” (2 Cor. 5:20). In the Old Testament, the word “recon ciliation” is translated “atonement,” which means making sacrifice so as to effect reconciliation. This is what God Himself did. He made peace through the blood of the cross, having abolished the enmity. The darkest enmity is that which sets the hu man soul at variance with God. It is a great thing to be able to bring into union feelings and emotions that have been at va riance. It is a great boon to bring voices that have been out of tune into perfect ac cord, to bring_ hearts that have been mu tually hostile into a common understand ing. Reconciliation is not based on com promise. It is not enough to hush up a quarrel^ and let bitterness be dropped. . . . Reconciliation means the settlement of all differences, so that both sides are equally
