Belgrade hosts historic conference SUMMIT DEDICATED TO THE FOUNDING OF THE NON-ALIGNED MOVEMENT The Republic of Serbia, together with the Republic of Azerbaijan, which is currently presiding over the Non-Aligned Movement, will host a commemorative gathering to commemorate the 60 th anniversary of the First NAM Conference, which was held in Belgrade back in 1961 Belgrade, as a kind of “birthplace” of the Non- Aligned Movement, where its first Summit was held back in 1961, holds special historical symbolism as the city where confirmation was given to the then newly established Bandung principles, which “laid the foun- dation” upon which the Non-Aligned Movement still stands today. This gathering will provide an important opportu- nity for the Non-Aligned Movement to review its his- torical contribution, reaffirm its commitment to the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter and support for a global order based on multilateral- ism, as well as to set new goals for the future.

The Non-Aligned Movement today boasts 120 mem- ber states, representing almost two-thirds of UN mem- bers, while another 18 states have observer status. The activities of the Movement are led by the presid- ing country, a position which has to date been held by Yugoslavia (twice), Egypt (twice), Zambia, Algeria, Sri Lanka, Cuba (twice), India, Zimbabwe, Indonesia, Co- lombia, South Africa, Malaysia, Iran and Venezuela. The presidency of the Non-Aligned Movement is cur- rently held by Azerbaijan, for the 2019-2022 period. The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) played a leading role in the Non-Aligned Movement from its inception. The first conference of heads of state and government of the Non-Aligned Movement was held in Belgrade, from 1 st to 6 th September 1961, while the ideological creators of that event are considered as having been the presidents of key countries: Yugo- slavia - Josip Broz Tito; Egypt (then the United Arab Republic) - Gamal Abdel Nasser; Ghana - Kwame Nk- rumah; Indonesia – Sukarno; and the first Prime Min- ister of India - Jawaharlal Nehru. That First Conference of the Non-Aligned Move- ment in Belgrade back in 1961 was attended by the heads of state and government of 25 countries (Af- ghanistan, Algeria, Burma, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea,
