F ado je reč za sudbinu, ali muziku nazivaju suedad, za šta, kažu Portugalci, ne- ma tačnog prevoda. Najbli- že bi možda bilo reći da se radi o čežnji za nečim, ali i nadi da će se ta čežnja na kraju ostvariti. Čuvena fado pevačica Kristina Branko, koja je nedavno održala dva sjajna kon- certa u Beogradu, za Elevate objaš- njava da se u svemu tome, zapravo, uvek radi o emocijama… – Nakon mnogo vremena suedad je postao fado, a fado suedad. Razu- mem ih kao jedno jedinstveno ose- ćanje, kao homogeno razumevanje života, kao amalgam koji rezultira samo jednom stvari na svim kraje- vima. Naravno, to je ljubav. Fado je i priča o čežnji… Za či- me vi čeznete, o čemu najče- šće pevate? – O ljudima i njihovim straho- vima, o gubitku, ali i o uskrsnuću, o nadi… Najčešće, ipak, o ljubavi koja vlada svim našim životima na svim našim poljima, od besa do strasti! Na početku ste želeli da bude- The word fado translates as fate, but the music is called saudade, a word which the Portuguese often say is untranslata- ble. The closest meaning would be long- ing for something, but also hope that this desire can come true... One of the world’s greatest fado singers, Cristina Branco, who recently held two major concerts in Bel- grade, says for Elevate that it is all about feelings… - I believe that after all this time sau- dade has become fado and vice versa. I understand them as a single feeling, an understanding of life that is quite homo- geneous, an amalgam that results in one thing and only that one thing. It is about longing… What do you long for? Does desire over- take you while you’re singing? What do you usually sing about? - About people and their anxieties, about loss, but also resurrection, hope. Mainly about love, because it rules us all in a wide range, from rage to passion! You initially wanted to be a jo- urnalist, but the music “stole you away”. Do you believe it was fate (fado)? - I don’t think so. It was my will and the signs in the stars conducting me! There

te novinar, ali vas je „muzika ukrala“. Da li verujete da je to bila sudbina (fado)? – Ne, ne verujem. Bila je to moja volja i znaci koji su se pojavili viso- ko gore među zvezdama. Dođe pone- kad vreme u životu kada prepozna- te te znake i prosto pustite instinkte da vas vode. Zaljubili ste se u fado zahva- ljujući neprikosnovenoj kralji- ci te muzike Amaliji Rodrigez. Na koji način je ona uticala na vas? – Njena interpretacija i sposob- nost da živi ono o čemu peva bila je moja prva lekcija. Počela sam da učim nova slova, novu azbuku živo- ta. Mnogo više od njenog glasa za- divile su me njena volja, snaga, nje- na strast da se uzdigne iznad svake tragedije. Muzika koju izvodite postala je bliska mnogima širom sve- ta, daleko od portugalskih uli- ca, radnika i prostitutki. Šta mislite u čemu je tajna? Life became very unpredictable, and fast. You fell in love with fado thanks to the undisputed queen of this music, Amalia Rodrigues. How did she influence you? - Her ability to interpret, to live what she was singing intensely, was my very first lesson, as if I was learning a new al- phabet. More than her voice, it was her will, her strength, her passion, along with tragedy! The music you perform has become close to everyone, far away from the Portugue- se neighbourhoods. What do you think it is that touches everyone’s soul and makes us feel it, even if we are socially and culturally unfamiliar with the experience? - That I don’t know! I can guess that the universality of this music, because it is

Ona se me- nja kao svet, podseća da među na- ma ima mnogo razlika, ali još više sličnosti koje nas ujedinjuju. Inter- net nas je gurnuo jedne drugima u naručje. U dobru i u zlu. Beogradska publika davno je zavolela fado. Postoje li neke sličnosti između naše dve ze- mlje koje možete da osetite na bini ili na ulicama? – Stvari koje je nemoguće obja- sniti ne treba ni dirati. Neka osta- nu u toj nepoznatoj zoni kako ne bi izgubile deo magije. Slažete li se? Kada biste pozvali ljude da do- đu u Portugal, šta biste im re- kli? Zašto da dođu, šta da vi- de, probaju ili osete? – Dođite i prepustite se. Portu- gal je emocionalno iskustvo. Otkrij- te ponovo sva svoja čula. The internet has pushed us towards each other, for good and for bad. Wim Wenders and his film “Li- sbon Story” did a lot to popu- larise this music and celebrate Madradeus. What is your im- pression of his film? - A documenting of Lisbon’s beauty! The Belgrade audience learned to love fado a long time ago. Are there any links between our two countries that you can feel on stage or on the streets? - Things that can’t be explained should remain there, in order to retain their sparkle. Don’t you believe? If you were to invite the peo- ple of the world to visit Portu- gal, what would you say? Why should they come to your ho- me country; what can they see, taste and feel? - Come and let yourself go. Portugal is an emotional experience. Use your sens- es or rediscover them with us. We are re- al people who are looking forward get- ting to know you.
